It’s The Strange Ones, a garage punk rock and roll band from Oakland drawing inspiration from vintage horror, pulp aesthetics, and raw, high energy proto-punk songwriting. They’re also the band behind these compilation albums and the Minor Chord Records efforts. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “Radiation,” about which the band had this to say: “Radiation started as a takedown of workplace toxicity and the slow erosion of self worth, but the fallout did not stop there. It followed me home. In retrospect, this song is not just about needing protection from others, but about the protection the closest people in my life needed from me.” Check out @strangeones__ on Vol. 2 of @thisisacomp out now from @minorchord.recs

Here’s Monarchy of Roses, a rock band built on loud guitars and restless energy. Drawing from many corners of rock music, their sound was forged in a warehouse and sharpened on stages across the Bay Area, with no plans of slowing down. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “Million Miles,” about which the band had this to say: “Million Miles is the opening track from our album BLEEDING OVER. It’s a fast paced, hard hitting introduction to the record. The guitar riff ignores all speed limits while the bass and drums thump your chest. Jeremy’s vocals put into words what the instruments are saying. You will want to hit the open road listening to this.” Check out @officialmonarchyofroses on Vol. 2 of @thisisacomp out now from @minorchord.recs

This is Dillon O’Bannon, a guitarist and songwriter with over a decade of experience delivering high-energy live shows, standout guitar work, and powerful vocals across bands, projects, and his own solo output. Included on Vol. 2 is his song “Path You Choose,” about which Dillon had this to say: “The first single from my Stomping Grounds LP, released in October 2025.” Check out @dillonobannon on Vol. 2 of @thisisacomp out now from @minorchord.recs

Meet The BPM’s from San Francisco, a bare bones guitar driven pop trio focused on concise, catchy songwriting. Built on bass, drums, guitar, and vocals, their sound often draws comparisons to legendary power pop and pub rock bands of the past. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “You Burn Them Down,” about which the band had this to say: “You Burn Them Down is a quirky little song about dealing with someone who burns all their bridges in life.” Check out @the.bpms on Vol. 2 of @thisisacomp out now from @minorchord.recs

This is KULT OF INDIFFERENCE from Arcata, a three-piece converting the masses of Humboldt County since July 2024. They don’t believe in bass players, but they make up for it with Elder Nate’s ripping leads, Elder Ralph’s 3-string rhythms, and Elder Matt’s punchy drums, all with the knobs turned to 10. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “Bodega Bay,” about which the band had this to say: “A high-energy surf-punk song about killer birds that reminds people not every song has to be three minutes long.” Check out @kult.of.indifference on Vol. 2 of @thisisacomp out now from @minorchord.recs

Here’s MIND THE CHORD, a power trio from Oakland with one simple mission: crank the amps, keep the grooves tight, and make every room move. Formed from a dorm-room jam between Ben Cashman and Dillon Variz, the band found its full force when drummer Will Eukel joined the mix, locking in a sound that bounces between fuzz-rock, blues, and surf with pure head-bobbing energy. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “Roll Them Dice,” about which the band had this to say: “Our heaviest track yet, a hard-hitting, bass-driven ride built to get bodies moving. It’s three minutes of raw, kinetic energy that never lets up.” Check out @mindthechord on Vol. 2 of @thisisacomp out now from @minorchord.recs

Say hello to LOST COSMOS from Petaluma, self-described as four mature men making music for all age groups. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “Fresno,” about which the band had this to say: “It started as a lo-fi ska rap song.” Editor’s note: I can totally hear it, can you? Meet NO FUCKING GOOD from San Jose, an anarchic blend of punk and metal, channeling the chaos of The Bronx, Murder City Devils, and Cro-Mags into a sound that hits as hard as it feels. Formed in 2020 when founding members met in rehab, the band turned recovery into raw energy, writing songs that cut straight through struggle and survival. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “TAG,” a track about the highs and lows of addiction and the unpredictable ride of life itself. This is PHANTOMS FOREVER, an alt rock band from Oakland, CA, formed in 2023 out of a shared love for the East Bay music scene and a desire to be part of it themselves. The band says that from the start, their mission has been simple: make the music they want to hear and have a damn good time doing it. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “Wrong,” written during a late-night bout of writer’s block. The music was there, but the lyrics weren’t, so what started as frustration over “hating this stupid song” unraveled into an honest reflection on anxiety, self-doubt, and persistence. “Wrong” is an ode to facing your fears, finding strength in discomfort, and pushing through when everything feels impossible. This is SOMETHING WICKED, a high-energy garage punk band hailing from Arcata, CA, and the first addition to our compilation series from outside the Bay Area as we start to cross-pollinate Northern California’s different local scenes. Their songs tackle politics, society, horror, and the occasional joke or two. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “Deny, Defend, Depose,” about which the band had this to say: “Fueled by events broadcast over international news and personal experiences with the American for-profit healthcare system, this song puts words and energy to the feelings many people experienced in the aftermath of the United Healthcare assassination. FREE LUIGI.” Check out @somethingwicked707 on Vol. 2 of @thisisacomp out now from @minorchord.recs

Meet SIDE EYE, an Oakland-based power trio carving their way through the heavy music landscape with a distinctive blend of groove-driven stoner metal, heavy rock, and grunge. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “Safe Room,” about which the band had this to say: “Sometimes, versions of yourself you thought were long gone come back and fight to take control, attempting to redefine the person you thought you’d become. Sometimes they win, but not necessarily for good…” Check out @side.eye.music on Vol. 2 of @thisisacomp out now from @minorchord.recs

This is HYPNOTIC PATTERN, a four-piece traditional doom and heavy psych rock band from Oakland, CA, born in 2023 from the fumes of their first meeting at the Berkeley School of Rock. Their sound pulls from interstellar travel, dark fantasy, and space westerns, laying down Sabbath and Zeppelin-style grooves with female vocals that echo the power of HEART, early Ozzy, and the grungy weight of Windhand. Included on Vol. 2 is their song “Shadow Rabbit,” about which the band had this to say: “Shadow Rabbit blends ethereal Afro-Jazz inspired riffs with heavy hitting beats and chilling vocals. The lyrics came from Simone’s first experience with psychedelics on a haunted farm. We wrote this song to throw off the listener and challenge traditional song structure. Welcome to disorientation, brutality, and complexity — Shadow Rabbit is here to bring you to the nether realms. Will you go along?” Check out @hypnoticpatternmusic on Vol. 2 of @thisisacomp out now from @minorchord.recs
