New show announcement! ‘Roaming Rites’ is a solo exhibition of new paintings by James D Wilson, on show from June 12th - July 11th at This House. James’ subtly reconstructed works resist the idea of landscape as something observed from a fixed, single viewpoint and instead accumulate partial views and moments of interruption captured from train windows or on foot. The title ‘Roaming Rites’ plays on ‘roaming rights’ reframing movement through the land as a repeated, habitual act. Join us for the opening party on Saturday June 13th as part of @sitefestival : drinks will be served from 4pm. See you there!

We were so happy to welcome @rosiemcguinness this past week for our spring residency. Her work is a literal breath of fresh spring air: loose, playful and bright with a spontaneity that feels completely effortless. Can’t wait to have her back in August for an exhibition in the gallery. Our November open call will be announced very soon - 👀

It’s in the details! This piece by Chelsea was a collaboration with @fellowdesigns who she used to share a studio with. We love the nod to arts and crafts style frames. #artsandcrafts #chelseavivash #cotswoldgallery #thishousegallery

A little bit more about our lovely artist Chelsea Vivash whose work will be in the gallery till the 25th April. The backstory of ‘Tessellate’ began 4 years ago when Chelsea came to do a residency at the cottage in 2022. As we see with many artists the residency was spent making a series of drawings which were seeds planted for her future work. The culmination of this collection 4 years later is a poignant reminder of how important it is to have time and space away from deadlines, commissions and other people’s opinions to develop ideas. Tesselate features work that pushes the boundaries of Chelsea’s practice: We met a few times in the run up to the show and ideas of frame as form, working more intricately and on different scales, and thoughts about ‘the view’ were some of the things she wanted to push forward in her work. When we unwrapped the pieces last week we were blown away by the intricacy she has managed to convey without making things seem fussy. Unexpected details are everywhere: a dark stain on the inner edges of a panel framing the fruit bowl, the inside edge of a frame that’s been crafted with marquetry to offset the looser collage inside it. To see the full collection you can now shop on our website. For more images or the full catalogue send us an email/dm. The work is best viewed in person. If you would like to visit from afar do reach out for our recommendations to make a lovely day of it.

TESSELLATE : a show of marquetry by Chelsea Vivash is now open in the gallery. Drawing inspiration from a group of objects found in our cotswold cottage in Amberley, marquetry artist Chelsea Vivash presents a brand new collection reflecting on the quiet presence of everyday forms. Through abstraction, repetition, and a palette of gentle wood tones, the works transform the familiar into carefully constructed studies of shape and material. Chelsea came to This House for a residency back in 2022. Her dedication to craftsmanship and unique way of working combines in this collection to create a striking and unique collection of work which sits at the threshold of art and craft. #marquetry #contemporaryart #chelseavivash #cotswoldgallery

Artist feature: Ellie Cottrell is a Cheltenham based artist working primarily in oil pastel on paper. Her pieces are built through layered colour and texture, allowing the surface of the paper to remain visible. Often visually delicate, the works carry a strong emotional intensity. We found Ellie’s work via our open call and fell in love immediately with her characters and delicate approach to oil pastel. She’s a stones throw away over in Cheltenham but we are so happy to have found her 👀 @erc.drawing 1 - ‘Of A Violence’ - SOLD 2- At Once, Two Things’ - framed £500 3 - ‘There Was a Crack In Everything’ - framed £800 4 - Judgement Of Being’ - framed £700 ————— #oilpastel #artistfeature #cotswoldgallery

‘Whisper, Softly’ opens tomorrow! Come down from 4pm for a drink to celebrate this beautiful collection of work. We are utterly thrilled with how it’s come together and can’t wait to share it! ————————— Whisper, Softly explores work that dwells in quiet moments and tender shifts, as we gently ease back the blanket of winter. Situated within the seasonal threshold between winter and spring this exhibition deals in muted colour and restrained gestures, with an emphasis on intimacy. The show proposes quiet as an active condition; like the first signs of thaw, lengthening light, softened air, the slow return of colour these works invite pause and attentiveness. Whisper, Softly is an offering of calm and care, reminding us that change often arrives not all at once, but slowly in the spaces of quiet in between. Featuring work by Lucy Augé, Ellie Cottrell, Elizabeth Lenny, Beth Quarmby and Misa Gott. With objects from Gathered Store. @lucyauge_art @erc.drawing @thelizlenny @misagottart @bethquarmbyart @gathereduk
