Thanks to Marc Masters @marcissist for including ‘16mm’ by Dogs Versus Shadows & Nicholas Langley on his last Experimental Music roundup for @bandcamp Tapes and digital available from @strategictape
‘16mm’ - the brand new album by Dogs Versus Shadows & Nicholas Langley, is out now on @strategictape
Dogs Versus Shadows & Nicholas Langley return with a follow up to 2024’s ‘Salt Coast’, this time with a much deeper, double album-length dive into their sometimes unsettling brand of radiophonic acid, or “exploratory electronic music that lurks in mental doorways.”
16mm is the soundtrack to the type of dreams where you find dusty old reels of film from your past containing partially hidden memories, or long forgotten excerpts of you and your friends’ abandoned surrealist movies.
Praise for ‘Salt Coast’…
“Fans of early Aphex Twin will find much to love. The duo have crafted a similarly drowsy homage to their childhood nightmares, combining vintage radiophonics with genuinely disturbing soundscapes” Bob Fischer, Electronic Sound
“Both know a thing about how to transform sounds almost to the point of being unrecognisable, but Salt Coast finds the pair creating a sort of impenetrable fogginess around noises, melodies and borrowed segments… what Thompson and Langley do here is smother their inputs, not decay them. It’s both terrifying and beautiful in its own special way” Mat Smith, Further.
“This album is full of spectres and slithery reptiles and took a seemingly long abandoned road to get to us. It’s a truly beautiful thing.” Urban Mutant Radio

OUT TODAY!!
The special 10th anniversary limited edition cassette release of Sleep Chrysalis. Magpie Corsa of Nonconnah @cruelnaturerecs and Linden Pomeroy @third_kind_records@ramble_records constructed this haunting soundtrack with guitars, fx and tapes. Suited to semi-conscious and evocative listening on drawn out journeys, Sleep Chrysalis exists somewhere between lo fi ambient, shoegaze and Americana. The new Third Kind reissue of this classic tape comes with fully restored audio by Nicholas Langley, in an extra slipcase with extra photography and full coverage on-shell printing. Limited to 50 copies only.
Back in 2015 myself and @nonconnahordeath started a collaborative album after becoming acquainted via our split tape on long defunct Little L Records. Ideas and inspirations were emailed back and forth across the pond, and when it came to it the album was created in about 3 weeks. I’d been signed off from my landscaping job at the time due to injury, dosed up on Codeine, housebound and recently had got my mitts on a battered 4-track. A friend had stolen it from their high school and was happy to part with it. Magpie and myself were both making washed out ambient guitar music already, though this was my first exploration into tape manipulation - partly inspired by their Lost Trail project and some of the weird shows going on at @trainofthoughtrecordsandbooks at the time.
Another gadget which I’d gotten from local legend John the tape Barron.. a cassette eraser. This thing was weird, and didn’t work properly. You’d have to feed the tape through a few times in order to erase what was recorded onto it, so if you passed it through once you’d be left with a ‘ghost track’. This provided some great decayed sounds for guitar tracks along with whatever household objects I’d been feeding through effects. Our creative process was very free, unobstructed from any preconceived ideas.
Nicholas Langley floated the idea of doing a reissue on @third_kind_records . The original Sleep Chrysalis cassette had long been sold out, and the Centipede Farm label had seemingly vanished from the internet. This proved tricky as we couldn’t hunt down the original tracks so Nicholas kindly went through the tape, restoring and remastering it - this new edition sounds better than ever, complete with additional artwork, an outer slip case and full shell printed tape.
Pre-orders are up now, lnk in my bio.
1 - Sleep Crysalis J-Card artwork
2/3 - Original Sleep Chrysalis Cassette
4 - The trusty Tascam porta studio
5 - John the tape Barron’s Sony cassette eraser
Sleep Chrysalis is Linden Pomeroy and Magpie Corsa (Lost Trail, Nonconnah). Exactly 10 years ago they released a stunning short run cassette of guitar and tape manipulations. That tape has long been unavailable, and as it’s one of my favourites by these two notable talents, and veterans of Third Kind, I thought it best to make it available again with fully restored masters and expanded artwork. This rare gem of “spooky Americana soundscapery” is available to preorder today!! Don’t miss!!
Also, I should mention for the locals, Linden Pomeroy will be playing Cellar Arts Club, Worthing tomorrow (March 7th) on the eve of his solo guitar performance tour. You’ll be in for a treat if you can make it.
