As the 2022 edition of the Venice Biennale is fast approaching, today I had a look at my past Venice-related projects. The first time I visited the Biennale was in 2005, after working on @husseinchalayanofficial ’s project representing Turkey that year. Hussein had asked Tilda Swinton to be the lead actress in his film The Absent Presence, premiered at the Turkish pavilion. Tilda was very generous with her time and I was lucky enough to be able to shoot several portraits of her, one of which - unbeknownst to me - ended up on a billboard. It was only when I arrived in Venice late one night and took a vaporetto up the Grand Canal that I became aware of it being there. At the time though I felt so chuffed that I didn’t even think it was weird that the curators didn’t tell me they would put it there. Plus then I stayed in a flat where Tilda and co were staying for the week. #labiennaledivenezia #tildaswinton #husseinchalayan #thierrybal @tapiolito

Over the years I’ve had the immense pleasure to work with the brilliant artist @emma.hart_ on various projects. Recently I was commissioned to do the photography of her latest large scale work ‘Café’ for @mao_gallery in Oxford, which is part of a complete overhaul of the interior spaces. Inspired by Hart’s concept Club Together, ‘Café’ is a brightly painted space filled with her bespoke ‘furniture’. Dancing ‘hands in the air’ morph into seating, and tables that evoke disco lights throw pools of coloured light on the floor. Its bonkers and absolutely brilliant. @thesundaypainter @twwco #emmahart #thierrybal

Two new portraits I shot for the announcement of the appointment of the wonderful Sally Tallant as the new director of @hayward.gallery and Visual Arts of the @southbankcentre . Such wonderful news, good to have her back in the UK and can’t wait to enjoy her team’s future exhibition programme. #sallytallant #haywardgallery #southbankcentre #portrait #thierrybal

Some new photography of @ryanjgander ‘s work ‘Ms Modern Classical Conceptualist, or Their Shadows Obscured (Dramaturgical framework for structure and stability) (2025)’ @sainsburycentre in Norwich. This was an incredibly complex shoot as during the daylight hours the work blends in with the metal components of the building and regardless of the time of day it moves with the airflow in the building. So it became a ‘night’ at the museum! Shot with #profoto strobes. #ryangander #sainsburycentre #norwich

Yesterday saw the launch of ‘The Line: Public Art in East London’ published by Monacelli/Phaidon. The Line has transformed East London’s urban landscape into a dynamic cultural corridor. Spanning nearly 8 km, the outdoor public art trail features monumental sculptures, intimate installations, and an evolving programme, offering a contemporary art experience on a free and daily basis.  The book presents work by 35 international artists, including Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin, Thomas J Price, Rasheed Araeen, Rana Begum, and Helen Cammock. I am happy to have contributed several pages to the book, three spreads of which are included in this post. Thank you @_meganpiper @_sarah_carrington @thelinelondon .

Yoko Ono’s Earth Peace Flag Marks International Peace Day. Today her enduring call for peace returns to The Grand, Folkestone, reaffirming a message first shared during the 2014 Triennial. @yokoono ‘s Earth Peace (2014) first appeared across Folkestone during the 2014 Triennial, in the form of posters, billboards, stickers, postcards and badges. Three elements of the work remain on long-term loan to the town, all centred on The Grand: a flag, flown annually on International Peace Day; an inscribed stone set into the grass along The Leas; and a message in Morse code projected across the Channel. photography by @thierry_bal #yokoono #earthpeace @creativefstone #thierrybal @_meganpiper @artplugged
