Sam Stockwell, Senior Research Associate at the Turing’s Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS), explains recommended measures that can enhance our resilience to AI information threats: ✅ Reviewing and refining government crisis response protocols ✅ Sharing guidance on AI chatbots used for fact-checking purposes ✅ Implementing policies to down-rank or demote unverified content during crisis events Coordination across government, online safety regulators and industry is key to implementing an effective threat response. How is AI being weaponised during crisis events? Sam Stockwell, Senior Research Associate at the Turing’s Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS), explains how AI can be used to create: ⚠️ Content generation threats – harmful false content that appears to come from the scene, such as deepfakes. ⚠️ Content dissemination threats – amplifying or creating false narratives, for example through bot accounts. ⚠️ User engagement threats – making fake narratives sound more persuasive, for example by flooding training data for AI chatbots with fake news articles to distort the information served to users. 🌤️ This week we’re hosting a two-day workshop with the @metoffice to enhance FastNet. FastNet is a collaborative project focused on developing artificial intelligence algorithms to transform UK weather forecasting. Led by Scott Hosking and Kirstine Dale, we’re excited to be working on the next phase, training and refining our model to produce detailed regional UK weather forecasts.
