Whilst many people think of hail as more of winter weather phenomenon, for large parts of the UK its actually most likely during spring.
In this cutout from this week’s Met Office Weather Studio Live, @weatheralx looks at how common hail is at different times of the year.
When will it warm up? Well there are signs next week may see the temperatures rise as we head towards the bank holiday weekend
It’s too early to say for sure and give full details of the weather that weekend so stay up to date with the forecast in the coming days

The weekend is looking changeable but that means whilst there will be some rain at times, it will also be dry and bright for periods too.
Temperatures will rise a little but it’s likely we’ll have to wait until next week for the warmth to really push in.
Clare Nasir takes us through the details.

Whilst there has been plenty of cloud (cumulus, stratus, altostratus…) around this week, most of us have also seen the sunshine breaking through with blue sky at times ☀️

Cold northerlies this week 🥶🌬️… but change is on the way ⏳
Temperatures will start to lift slowly as we head into next week, with that chilly wind finally easing. It’s not an instant turnaround, and western areas will see a wet start to the week🌤️
By the end of the week, many areas are likely to see more sunshine and a welcome return to warmer conditions ☀️🌼
Spring warmth making a comeback — just with a bit of patience needed 🌱

Temperatures on Wednesday will be a little below average for the middle of May, and when you take the chilly northerly breeze into account, it’s going to feel cool at times.
Can it really rain diamonds? What’s the weather like on other planets? What’s the forecast for Jupiter? How nice is Neptune?
We have some wild weather on earth… but on our neighbouring planets in the solar system the weather can be even crazier, on some it rains diamonds on others it’s 450C and did you know we get tornadoes on Mars.

Will it warm up this week? When’s the sun coming out?
It’s been pretty cool recently and that is going to continue this week with below average temperatures by day and the chance of frost at night.
Expect some heavy showers too, especially on Wednesday and Thursday when thunderstorms are possible.
Between the showers there’s going to be some sunshine ☀️ but it’s not really going to feel very warm
Despite the cool feel the sun is still strong and UV levels could be high in the south

A classic May mix this weekend for the UK.
Warm and bright in the south at first. Much colder further north. Heavy showers developing in between, for the Midlands, Northern England and parts of Wales. Showers also pushing into the south later.
Then, during Sunday, rain clears southeast into the continent with cooler but brighter weather following from the north - albeit with some rain for the far north of Scotland.
We’ve had some chilly nights this month already
Some rural frosts are still possible into next week
If you’ve delicate plants out you’ll want to keep across the forecast to see if your areas may get down to zero!
But as this graphic shows it’s not uncommon to get frosts deep into spring

Exceptionally heavy rain is affecting parts of South Africa at the moment.
@weatheralx takes a look at how unusual this is.
The heavy rain and strong winds will cause significant impacts.
