According to UNICEF, worldwide 129 million girls are out of school with those in countries affected by conflict being twice as likely to be in school than girls living in non-affected countries.
At The Techover Foundation we believe that only through investing in girls education, creating safe spaces for them to learn and prioritizing efforts to annihilate gender disparities on a local and national scale, can we actually break down the negative gender norms that affect girls from pursuing/staying in education. We need less talk and more action. Every girl deserves the right to an education, access to technology and access to opportunities.
Girls are leaders.
Girls are change-makers.
Girls are our future.
Let's celebrate them. Happy International Day of the Girl Child ❤

BRINGING ROBOTICS TO RURAL NIGERIA
On Wednesday, we hosted our first STEM workshop with the NGO, where I taught girls from underserved communities in Nigeria how to make their first robot!
So inspired by the passion and tenacity these children exude despite all their personal challenges, circumstances and living in areas where girls are not supported in pursuing STEM careers and often reduced to low paying menial jobs. It was interesting to talk to them - some as young as 10 - on a deeper level, and listen to their concerns with often being forgotten or overlooked by both the Government and educational bodies because they come from poorer backgrounds.
It was heart-breaking to hear but it solidified within me even more, my reasons for teaching in Africa and my decision to shift my focus from the private school sector to Government schools.
These girls were some of the brightest students I have ever taught! Within a few hours, they were able to fully recite back to me what a robot was and name each part of their obstacle avoidance robot with ease!
There is a natural intelligence that I constantly find in Africa that is unmatched, where people constantly fight and strive to be better regardless of how they were raised or financial status. It often makes me think that all our people ever need is that one OPPORTUNITY. Someone to BELIEVE in them. A chance to be HEARD, NOT JUDGED, a SUPPORTIVE GOVERNMENT and ACCESS TO RESOURCES.
There is still alot of work to be done to change the current educational system in Nigeria, alot of it from the Government level but I always encourage people who have a skill or a passion in something, not to wait for someone else to create change. It may never come. Instead share that knowledge, give back, do what you can and don't let anybody tell you what you're doing is too small or doesn't matter. You never know whose life you could be changing.
Special thank you once again to @arduino.cc for believing in us and being our Official Sponsor!💜

At The Techover Foundation, we pride ourselves on being an NGO that focuses on those that are often overlooked and in need of support.
We want to make sure that no child is left behind or excluded from quality education and basic amenities whilst focusing on incorporating a more STEM based curriculum, to prepare the next generation for the current and future technological revolution.
Our first official mission takes place in Nigeria where we will be training girls from Rural Nigeria to build their first robot, introducing programming and the need for non-tech skills too such as teamwork and communication.
Stay tuned for our first workshop!

Introducing: The Techover Foundation ⭐
Welcome everyone! If you follow my personal page @thetechover then you've definitely seen me speak about starting my own foundation.
Those that know my story, know that my transition into engineering was not a smooth road at all. I was countlessly discouraged from pursuing robotics - so much so I almost dropped out!! If it wasn't several people telling me to choose a different career since I am a "woman", it was my own self doubt triggered from hardly seeing any black female robotic engineers anywhere.
I made a promise to God that if by some miracle I didn't drop out and actually graduated, I would do all in my power to increase diversity within STEAM so that no other little girl would ever have to feel like she wasn't good enough to pursue her dream career.
Since 2015 I have independently organised, self funded and contributed to several non profit educational, wellbeing and STEAM workshops with one thing being constant - people reaching out about wanting to be involved! I'm so glad that this has grown beyond my little dream and that people want to support with not only their time but money and even expertise, so I've put that official stamp on it and made a NGO!!
Welcome aboard partners, look forward to our journey together and thank you in advance for all your support! Peace and love always 💜
