Two weeks ago I hung up my leathers, swept my booth, and closed the curtains. I had just completed UAS’s basic welding class. A journey that had begun with a phone call to
@laynajoyart in a public park in Mascota, Jalisco had ended, for now.
This past August-September I got to be a part of one of the most inspirational and aspirational projects I’ve ever seen.
@thesphinxgate . Part big art, part transpersonal transformation. It brought an experience to Burning Man that invited people to get in touch with the deepest parts of themselves and if ready let some of those parts shift.
Inspired by the Neverending Story, the main aspect of the piece were two 35’ tall sphinxes that stood in deep playa, beacons seen far and wide. Part of my excitement about working on the project was learning to weld, but by the time I arrived at the Loom in Oakland in mid August to help, the metal frames for the bodies and the majority of the welding work were already on their way to playa. Luckily my timing lined up such that
@laynajoyart and I got to collaborate and create the breasts. Cold bending metal, we cut, shaped, sculpted, and welded two 8’x10’ busts. She showed me how to create a molten pool and attach two pieces of metal together, piquing my curiosity, but still leaving much to learn.
Two days after that final welding class some of the people who worked on the project got together in Oakland to celebrate and reflect on what we created. The synchronicity of this gathering happening within days of me completing the welding course made me smile and laugh a little about the way life unfolds. While I didn’t learn to weld as a part of the project, I learned valuable lessons about myself: my habits, my tendencies, my boundaries, my capacity, my resilience, and a myriad of other things. Working with the amazing people I did, I realized how immersive collaborative experiences like that can bring us in contact with the things that we most need to learn. As I build a life here in Juneau, I’m integrating those lessons and pursuing things that are aligned with that learning. Taking that which I know and that which I’m curious about to create something new. Welding.
