#ArtistSpotlight Theresa Weber

Theresa Weber presents three new relief paintings in the exhibition #Lineages at October Gallery, London. Each canvas reflects her conceptual exploration of the ever-shifting nexus of identity, bringing together cultural, historical and mythological references. Inspired by the ecofeminist writing of Suzanne Césaire, Weber sees these new works as abstract infinity landscapes that deal with the dissolution between the human body and its geographical terrain. They connect to the resilience found in the Caribbean landscape and its population, which, although shaken by catastrophic natural forces, has the strength to bounce back.
These works connect to her wider ‘cartographies’ series, in which richly layered surfaces incorporate silicone, acrylic paste, modelling mass, resin and print. Across these dense collages, Weber inlays acrylic nails and beads as empowering jewellery elements. Together, the works map the intersectional body from a decolonial perspective, resisting Western notions of the grid and linear time in favour of organic form, energy fields and circular temporality as acts of resistance.
