FELA: MUSIC AS A WEAPON IS A MAGICAL-REALISM JOURNEY THROUGH THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE LEGENDARY NIGERIAN MUSICIAN AND ACTIVIST FELA KUTI. HIS ANTI-COLONIAL, ANTI-FASCIST VIEWPOINT IS ALL THE MORE IMPORTANT TODAY THAN EVER.
Jibola Fagbamiye is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary visual artist, illustrator, and storyteller whose work sits at the intersection of African history, political resistance, and North American pop culture.
Conor McCreery is an Eisner-nominated writer and a journalist who’s worked on two continents. In addition to Fela: Music is the Weapon, his newest projects are the YA adventure series, The Last Witch (BOOM!), the coming-of-age tale Status.
Oduenyi is a Nigerian Irish-born Director, Curator, Warrior Poet and musician. They are a core member of TRIBE, an experimental community space built around art.

Fela Kuti is in the Rock and Roll hall of fame!
Fela's story is epic. Yes, he was a legendary musician, but his real legacy is how he risked everything to stand alongside the oppressed, in Nigeria and around the world.
They burnt down his home. They tried to kill him. They sent him to jail on trumped-up charges. They parked freaking TANKS outside his concerts so people couldn't hear his words.
Didn't work. Fela refused to be silenced even though it cost him almost everything.
After you read this, I encourage you to bump his song: 'Zombie' (the one that caused the Nigerian military government to send a THOUSAND soldiers after him), kick back, and let the King of Afrobeats vibes wash over you.

Around fifeen years ago, I wrote a short story for a friend's anthology to support a children's charity.
I wrote about a young girl, desperate to be seen, who went deep into the woods on the day the Queen of the witches was out - because she wanted people to see that she was brave, and that she was special.
That became the seed for The Last Witch - Fear and Fire. I was blessed to get the incredible VV Glass (@anadapta ) to draw the book, and the wonderful and kind Natalia Nesterneko (@varavarus ) to draw it. With award-winning letterists Jim Campbell (@jimcampbell ) and Troy Esposito (@ghostglyph ) who made the writing sing.
Then we watched as COVID ravaged the world and wondered: "how could anyone care about reading silly little stories at a time like this?"
But you folx did. I guess we all needed stories more than ever at that point, and I was humbled by how many people told me that their kids had loved the book (and that they liked it a lot too).
Now, after a four-year wait - when Book 2, Blood and Betrayal, was wondering if it would ever see the light of day -- that young girl, Saoirse, is taking the final steps of her journey.
If you loved The Secret of N.I.M.H., or The Dark Crystal, or wonder what Avatar The Last Airbender would be like if it was Irish, with juuuust the right amount of child canabilism... well then, you've come to the right place!

Day 1 of @fanexpocanada was wonderful. After being out of the loop for awhile it was great to see so many familiar faces.
And there was a great surprise waiting for me when I got back home - the new Kill Shakespeare books!

I must have drawn Fela Kuti a thousand times, different angles, lighting, even how he aged over the years—while working on the graphic novel with @therealconor
We read every book, watched every documentary, studying his voice, politics, and mannerisms, trying to capture the essence of the man.
So when I finally met his children @femiakuti , @yeniakuti , and @mrs_anikulapokutibakare (Seun Kuti was not in town when I visited), and his grandson @madekuti …
I realized something.
The genes are strong.
If you ever wonder what Fela might think about the world today, listening to his children is a good place to start.
They’re their own people, of course.
But it became very real to me that #FelaLives through them.
Day 2, so far, so good. Saw Canada win silver. Stumbled on the grand opening of a trampoline park (free entry!), ate waaaay too much sushi...
