Most universities don't tell you this when they take your money for a graduate degree in film scoring: Lucrative careers are indeed possible, but they take a lot of time to achieve. There aren't many full-time jobs that pay a living wage available to early-career composers. In fact, film scoring isn't really a job in the traditional sense, since you do most of your work as an independent contractor. It's much more like owning a business. And typically, you'll be working a side job while you score low-budget indie projects to build your resume and gain experience. If you're lucky, that side job might still be music-related, but it doesn't have to be. What's important is that you recognize this career is a marathon, not a sprint. And that your eventual goal MUST BE to get to the top of the industry, where the real money is, or you'll never have a sustainable business. When I look back on how I tried to navigate the film industry as a young composer, all I can do is cringe 😫 Seriously, I made just about every mistake in the book. But after stumbling in the dark for many years, I was very lucky to get a great assistant job from an A-list composer who taught me everything I needed to know about working at a high level. Still, I had to work very hard to overcome the mindset challenges that were baked into my brain from early childhood. Since then I've been helping my fellow composers chart a course through the industry. And as the industry evolves in the digital age, my clients and I have been on the front lines figuring out the new strategies and best practices that get you hired on top films, TV shows, and video games. Most film composers move way too quickly when trying to get hired. SLOW DOWN! This is a game of trust, and relationships. It takes time for opportunities to develop. It's not unlike dating: you need to get to know someone before you make a commitment to sharing your life with them. Well, to a filmmaker, their project IS their life, and they're not just going to hand it over to someone who sends them a random email. Directors, producers and game developers report being SPAMMED TO DEATH by hordes of new composers who are desperate to gain a foothold in the industry. If you're new to the scoring game, don't start spamming directors and trying to push your way to the front of the desperate hordes. Slow down. Be patient. Level-up your skills until you sound like a mid-tier composer who just hasn't arrived yet. Upgrade your marketing materials so that you look the part too. Learn to talk like a film industry professional. Go to the events and become part of the community. Make friends and build relationships. This takes time, but it's a winning strategy.
