The Pit

It’s about more than dance. The Pit is a space that’s rooted in love. Yes, it’s about competition but love is always at the forefront. As we are going through photos of the night we noticed so many beautiful moments of embrace between competitors. This is not something we requested, but it’s something that comes when everyone who enters the space is welcomed with love and respect. The night started with @curtisthecourteous welcoming us into the space and telling us that he loves us. And that set the tone for the rest of the night. Needed a week to process. The Pit was a special moment for us and all of those who shared the experience with us. Although this event is promoted as a dance battle, it served as so much more than that. It was a reunion, a space of healing, a celebration, therapy, a party, and a showcase of love. We knew we promoted last minute so initial expectations were low. The goal was 8 dancers and 50 spectators. We ended the night with 25 dancers and 110 attendees. You all showed up and showed out for yourselves and for Rook. He laid the foundation and now our job is to keep building. We love yall. Stay tuned for the next date! -The Pit Crew

❤️ Sound On ❤️ This is not just an event, this is the next chapter of a story that Jimmy already started writing—he just passed me the pen. I was recently having a conversation with @stacyvanb about how we need to do a better job of writing and archiving the history of dance in Buffalo. When you’re in the present, history seems so far away but the reality is as soon as the moment passes…it’s history! All that to say, it is my job to make sure people know what The Pit is. And thanks to Jimmy’s dedication to having events captured, we have the history to archive! This is footage from The Pit 2 in 2017 at Milkies and then footage from The Pit promo shoot in 2023. And now in 2026 we will witness the next chapter of The Pit this Sunday! The Pit is not new. The Pit is not just entertainment. It’s a place for genuine energy to be exerted and exchanged. A place where movement is welcomed. A place where bodies cry. Where bodies sweat. Where people connect. Where dancers receive support and praise for their willingness to be vulnerable. 3 years ago I reached out to @eatoffart to host a promo shoot for The Pit and all these beautiful people showed up and filled the room with so much love and energy. Needless to say…3 years later The Pit All-Styles Dance Battle is finally happening!
