Story time! ✨️
I've always been shy or closeted in the academe in the way that the notion of anything queer being discussed in the built environment is anything like a fairytale. The industry itself is highly patriarchal and homophobic by default, and by extension, conversations about it in the academia. God knows how many closeted queer design professionals have wanted to do research on their existence and their relationship with space. Very few have punched up and in this year's PQSC, only 3 works out of over hundred research topics were only about the built environment. One of these was mine, which was brought about during a change of heart (and an on the spot change in my thesis topic as I began to pursue my Masters degree).
Philippine Queer Studies Conference 2024 is the community putting its foot down and carving space in the academia, saying that, no--we won't be ignored anymore because we ARE a legitimate body of study, we are also CULTURE, and SCIENCE, and ART and all these amazing things.
It was so amazing to meet one of main references, Dr. Ronald Baytan, who came to watch my presentation 🥹 among very interesting audiences--and to be able to present in the same session with L Arch. Norman Brito , whose paper presentation (QueerZone City) ✨️during my graduate student orientation✨️ became the trigger for me to proceed with the topic of my heart, not of my brain.
To my mentors in this topic--words will never be enough.
Dr. Gerard Lico, Dr. Carmen Bettina Bulaon, Ar. Leonido Jun Gines, and John Brian de Asis--🫰✨️
To pursue Queer Studies as a queer person, is to fight AND to love. And if you have been sitting on pursuing that topic, this is your sign to start and join us in that collective upward punch. See you in the next PQSC ? 👀🏳️🌈
Thank you, UP Center for Women's and Gender Studies. 🙏
Hello po at makulay na araw sa inyo! 🏳️🌈
Ako po si Ar. Ysa Peñas, humihingi ng kaunting oras ninyo upang sagutan ang survey na ito, bilang bahagi ng thesis ko sa ilalim ng UP College of Architecture, Master of Architecture Program.

February is upon us, and that means it’s National Arts Month once more.
I aimed to post more works and explorations in an attempt to resonate with more kindred souls, and what better piece to begin with, than Taragram.
Taragram is the second iteration of the Memory Vessel, created for the Tara, Tara exhibit @tara.pilipinas which ran last year from September 13 to October 9. It was a great honor being included with these artists, with our own interpretations and reimaginings of its digital repatriation. I have an affinity for postcards and temporality, and imprinting one’s essence in a temporal moment in a unique piece specific to the exhibit or vision is what makes the Memory Vessel constant yet separate.
The Memory Vessel still awaits its third collection of moments.
Care to be its next moment? Let’s talk.
Sometime this year, I debuted the new studio logo for @isapamana.natin ~
It was initially made from compounded typefaces, while figuring out if I should hire one of my designer friends to create the logo or not. One day I just decided to do it.
Drawing from my roots as a sketcher, I wanted the logo to still be letters, but a lot more personal. The first letters consist of an “?!”, something I’d say could describe myself and my style in little to no words at all. It’s also an interjection of surprise, which I wish to provide in the best way possible for all my clients.
Oh, we've been busy, and in the best way ever.
Excited to share projects we've got going and coming for us! Here's some clues to the blues. ✨️👀
See you soon!

Proof of love! ✨️ and some thoughts.
Making this beyond curation because there is a lot of pressure that comes with it.

1: I actually have a "Professional Yapper" pin. All the while I'm grieving the virtual loss of two mentors who suddenly became proverbial ghosts. 👻 (No they're not dead but I'm getting over it since the future should matter more. Go with the people who look at the same horizon with you.) To heartily academically yapping more.
2: I got 3 colored whiteboard markers and I'm having a blast teaching. Oh, and I use videogames for HOA education. Discussing tumuli with Geralt until I get attacked by wolves. I will get an orange and purple whiteboard marker next.
3: Did my thesis proposal defense and I am on residence leave this sem. Next sem, I'm taking a 211 that I missed out on (better audited early than have my Thesis 1 invalidated) and I'm taking the sweet time to grow a little academically and financially. 🌿
4: A year with you. And 11... And more.
5: Looks promising but I've gotta get back to backlogs on this one. Thank you for the trust. 🙏
6: My fave Filipino painter will always be Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo.
7: Lost two of our boys within the same week. We're managing. 🤍
8: Nothing hits harder than the old gang being nerds together. It definitely hits other people the wrong way tho pero kebs lang.
9: Heritage Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation et al
10: Surreal moment, still. Big Bird moment but this is a reminder that I'm doing something right somehow. We work harder. 🐔
Stabilizing and getting backlogs out of the way, still. I will get back as soon as I can (in all legitness). Life slugs the lights out of you sometimes.
FYI drink your water, eat regularly, the sunshine is healthy only til 9am, and may the bridges that end up burning light the way forward. 🔥 See you someday.
Tough question for a curious crowd:
What are you enabling to happen in the current state of our built heritage?
It was very bitin, ika nga! But it was a lengthy and loaded conversation nonetheless, and met new friends in this pursuit of dismantling the exclusivity of Authorized Heritage Discourse!
Much thanks to T H E CCP Visual Arts and Museum Division @ccpvamd and Brutalist Pilipinas @brutalistpilipinas , for extending this invite and partnering with us. Excited to work with them in the next parts of this pursuit, along with these two:
Karl Castro @karlfmcastro and SJ Go @stephenpamorada@theheritagecollective , who were fated to come with in the same ride North, and an extended Director's Cut discussion just naturally flowed. I am also excited to work on projects with these two, for the benefit of our heritage. Hehe
Looking forward to writing more, discussing more, and working even harder to enable more communities in this uphill battle.

USk Quezon City @uskquezoncity sketchcrawl-ed in this year's Maginhawa Summer Fest by the Quezon City Government @qc_hotspot , which was also in line with the International Urban Sketchers Week! 💅🥰
Food, trees, eclectic knick knacks here and there, and some laidback chill living--all in one street scene.
Glad to see my friend and former workmate Solid @miz_solid finally go to one of our sketchcrawls! 🥹

Day 2
QC Sketch Tour!! (QMC, San Pedro Bautista Church, and UP Diliman)
Fun. Tiring. Amazing. First time going to San Pedro Bautista Church and who knew there was an 19th century church in Quezon City (with expansions and alterations). Of course your conservation architect girlie had a field day and was reminded by Camille to "not work" 🫣 though I hope the recommendations I gave to the parish office would help!
Awesome to have met kindred souls via sketching and art (shoutout to Ding who serendipitously met me @ SPB!) Did half of the Oval from Benitez to Quezon Hall with a new format: the Sketch Tour! I hope we get to roll this out among the living (and the dead? 👀🪦✏️)
See ya around, sketchers! ✨️
