Once you start to notice them, you see them everywhere ☀️🪞🏙️ 💫
Looking forward to my upcoming residency in Birmingham, Alabama where I’ll have two weeks to research, explore and make new work based on these light forms I’ve been tracking in New York City for years.
Coincidentally, Birmingham is home to Sloss Furnaces, a huge producer of the steel that built many of the skyscrapers and other big infrastructure projects in NYC in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
I’m so fascinated by these ephemeral, glowing shapes hiding in plain sight in the urban landscape. I lived in NYC for almost two decades before noticing a single one, and now they tug at my peripheral vision every time I walk down the street when the sun’s out.
Makes me think about how many things we filter out and don’t notice—both the flickers of poignant beauty and the ugly truths we let ourselves go numb to.
A big part of this work comes from a pure fascination with reflected light, but at the root of it is the daily practice of trying to get myself to slow down, stop filtering and really see.
Thank you
@theoldbailey and
@theoldbailey.gallery for the opportunity to dive deep. I’m so grateful 🙏
