The Oh Hellos

The strings! They whisper, they sing, they soar, they shred. Show after show, Hagy and Sarah pulled off the great magic trick of welding the viola and the violin into a single voice. It felt like sorcery every night to witness the interplay of the two lock in, as though they were two lobes of a shared brain. When they’re not shredding on viola or leaping to and fro (occasionally straight into the crowd), Hagy is a formidable sound engineer both in live and studio settings. And when she’s not performing with us “headbanging but with her bow” (her words), Sarah is competing nationally as a Celtic fiddle player, shaping the next generation of fiddle students with her expertise, or sitting in on a session at the nearest pub. Since our very first tour, Austin has been rising to the challenge of translating the studio drum parts to a live setting (a challenge set by two non-drummer songwriters who recorded their earlier albums by overdubbing a dozen takes). When he’s not keeping us all in time, Austin fronts his project @midcardtx and drums for a handful of other Austin acts, such as @hexbfband and @lolatried Luckily for us, Zack not only covers the aux drum kit, but he’s also a killer banjo player. There were times where the arrangement would ask him if he could play two banjo parts at one time, and he would tell it to hold his beer. And when he’s not ripping it on the twang thang (sorry), he’s the city’s hot commodity pedal steel, playing for acts like @brody__price , @chaparelle , and many more. The rhythm section wouldn’t be complete without our bassist Drew. Not only is he an incredible multi-instrumentalist, he’s such a good hang that he’s become the most requested hotel roommate in the whole crew! When he isn’t pulling double duty playing bass and a sampler with us, he’s probably still playing a sampler somewhere, likely for a film or game he’s scoring, or a record he’s producing. Translating our studio arrangements into a live performance would not be possible without a near-million helping hands. Thankfully, we’ve been lucky enough to be surrounded by some of the coolest and most talented musicians one could ever hope to meet. We’re cool friends rich! And so can you should be too! :) I mean, look at these goofs. Josh (beard, Hatsune Miku) and Nathanael (mustache, Dracula) form the electric heart of our touring band. We want to take a moment to appreciate the hardworking crew who made our Yours Truly tour possible! First up is Kirkland, who many (most?) of you met at the merch booth. In addition to being super industrious and professional and one of the friendliest people on earth, Kirkland is also like a sun lamp in the depths of winter, just relentlessly and effortlessly positive and encouraging. Thank you, Kirkland! Next is Sam, who helped design our sound and monitoring setup and ran it all from front of house every night. If you came to a show and found yourself thinking, “damn this band sounds really good,” that was thanks to Sam! Thanks for your expertise and calm presence, knowing you had our backs every night really let us give the shows our all. And last but certainly not least is Katie, our tour manager and stage lighting director! Katie is an unstoppable force of organization, competent and hardworking and unflappable, and also a deeply kind person we’re all extremely grateful to know. Austin — it’s taken us a moment to write this post ‘cause we weren’t fully sure how to express what this show meant to us. What a welcome home! We hear you packed the house so dense that the line to get into the venue stretched all the way out to I35??? FANTASTIC end to a fantastic month and a half. Thank you all so, so much.
