From Nigeria to the Oscars.
Nigerian-British actress Wunmi Mosaku’s Best Supporting Actress nomination marks a proud moment for African talent on the global stage.
African-directed films were also part of this year’s Oscars conversation. On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (Zambia) and Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight (South Africa / Zimbabwe) were among the films eligible in the 2026 Best Picture race, while The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia) went even further, earning an official Best International Feature nomination.
Nominations - and ultimately wins - may still be rare, but African presence on the global stage continues to grow, with our people and stories gaining increasing recognition.

Film review by one of our #ClubNOMAD members, @ochuwa__ 💚
“It’s honestly so refreshing to see a Black film break away from the usual stereotypes and give us something different - sometimes you just need vampires jamming in a juke joint!
Miles Caton as Preacher Boy was a standout; his performance was truly special. Watching Michael B. Jordan tackle two completely different characters, Smoke and Stack, was captivating and warmed my heart. That scene where Smoke cocks his gun at Stack? Pure “dom” energy. You love to see a man stand on business 🤩
This movie gets a 10/10!”

History made! My Father’s Shadow by Fatherland is the first Nigerian film ever selected for the Cannes Official Selection — competing in the prestigious “Un Certain Regard” category.
Set during the 1993 election crisis, the film follows two brothers navigating Lagos with their estranged father — a powerful story of identity, love, and fatherhood.
Starring Sope Disiru and Uzoamaka Aniunoh (previously seen in Ífé, which we were proud to screen at NOMAD), this marks a major moment for Nigerian storytelling on the world stage.
Even more exciting with Nigeria’s first-ever national pavilion at Cannes this year. Our cinema is rising—and this is one for the books.
Congratulations to the entire @wearefatherland team! Directed by #AkinolaDaviesJr, written by @kingxdavies and produced by @funmbi_o & @iamdargavel (Element Pictures).
