A full circle.
For many years, I photographed my friend @nataljamke in her studio — her, her daughter, and her amazing artwork. I was there simply as an observer, documenting what was already unfolding.
At that time, I wasn’t drawing. I was a photographer, trying to capture fairytale-like moments.
Now, after all these years, @abstrabet has invited me to take part in Gallery Night and to show my artwork in her studio at @material_studios_and_gallery — a space I’ve known for a long time, but from a different perspective.
This feels like a very meaningful moment in my life. I’m super excited about this! I will be there on April 17th from 4pm to 9 pm and April 18th from 11 am to 4 pm at The Marshall Building @themarshallbuilding Stop by and see us ❤️🔥
Meet Karen, contemporary abstract artist.
“There is something satisfying when painting tiny shapes over and over. It satiates. Each shape forms into a completed object, or particle, which then combines into a larger object. Each painting is a compound of these objects, glued together by a desire to create. Particles repeat, overlap, layer, connect, weave together to make a larger object. The particles are building blocks of color. They have their own identity, but they also contribute to the identity of the whole. And then, there is the space between each particle, a primordial glue that holds the world together.
My paintings are autobiographical. They pull from memories of places or experiences that had an impact on me. I was born in a small town in Western Wisconsin to a mixed Bolivian-American blended family. I spent most of my childhood exploring the remnants of my parent’s’ retired mink ranch.”
Stop by to shop and explore her studio during @gallerynightmke ✨

“When we love one another, the most delicate truth of love is held in the spirit, but my body is the record of those I have loved. I feel their bones as my bones.” Anne Truitt.
“In keeping with this understanding of Anne Truitt’s Daybook, paintings and sculptures become records of those I have loved. The echoes of women’s work, women’s grief, and women’s actions investigates material persistence of history, questioning what gets salvaged and what gets thrown away.”
