'Ring of Fire, and Ice'' - 02/10/2024 annular eclipse over Patagonia, part of my next project, titled 'Icebreaker', which I have been working on with @unesco in support of the 2025 @unitednations International Year of Glaciers' Preservation. The concept for this piece was to capture a single photograph that embodies the critical balance between the incredible power of the sun, the health of our glaciers, and the livelihoods that depend on them. Every eclipse is special, but seeing this one was a small miracle. We travelled 13,000km across the globe to the remote Glacier Leones, which gets an average cloud cover of 95%. Followed be several days of wet and windy hiking across the glacier to find the perfect location. When Eclipse Day came, it was unbelievable, clear skies and bright sunshine! The emotions were electric as the moon made first contact, and we waited with bated breath for the sun to dim darker and darker. As the winds picked up, snow was whipped into the air, burning brightly in the light of the eclipse. It was a bittersweet moment. The event was undeniably beautiful, but this glacier has seen dramatic decline over the past few decades, and at this rate, when the next eclipse passes overhead, the ice will be gone. “Wherever there is light, one can photograph.” One of my favourite photography quotes, do you know any good ones? 🤔 I used to avoid shooting at night. Why would I? You can't see anything and every image turns out grainy and noisy. Over time I've loved it more and more, until now it's become one of my biggest strengths. The quote is powerful because it reminds me that even with the faintest of lights, you can still create magic. Here's a message for you: I am a light catcher, my camera is my tool and my lens, my eyes. Every movement has a purpose, every press of the shutter is a memory. We walk the earth to experience life and we live to walk the Earth. Create things that you'll love and love what you create. It's been such a long and difficult journey to get to this moment... - From borrowing my school's point and shoot camera, to take macro photographs of insects in my garden. - Getting my first mirrorless camera 13 years ago, but only being able to afford dirt-cheap 50 year old vintage lenses. - To dropping out of university because of depression... 😬 - And then dropping out of university... AGAIN... because of, you guessed it, depression... 😂 - Picking myself up and starting a new degree/career which I finally graduated from. But in my free time rediscovering my love for photography during this time. - Working with @adobe during lockdown @adobeuk - Getting signed as a Sony Ambassador @alphauniversebysony.eu - Visited Scotland twice to try and get this photo (failed both times) - Visited a third time and got caught in a heavy blizzard. But suddenly the weather changed and I got the perfect conditions. - Dropped my camera, which rolled 50m down the side of this mountain 20 minutes before I took this photo... 👀 A lot of ups and downs, that I will share more about in the future. I love the wave of solar eclipse photographs flooding the internet from today! Eclipses are one of nature's most magical wonders, a brief moment of perfection in a chaotic world. If you did get blessed with clear skies and saw it today, I hope you enjoyed it! I love the anticipation that you feel, knowing that the moon is approaching the sun in the sky but not being able to see the moon until it touches the sun. That moment of first contact is euphoric, and as a photographer, it is your signal to go, go, go! It is so much fun, and 100% should be on everyone's bucket list! Here are some shots from my last mission to photograph the annular solar eclipse, also known as a "Ring of Fire" in Patagonia last October. We got incredibly lucky to witness that eclipse as Patagonia is notorious for its unpredictable and changeable weather. Much like the UK, it is cloudy a lot of the time, and every day leading up to eclipse day, there was rain or snow... Winner of our Landscape award, Liam Man, has built a reputation for his superb night landscapes, lit entirely by drones mounted with LED lights. Now Sony Ambassador Liam started shooting at night because he was commuting to work in London during the day, so it was the only time available, but he soon embraced the limitation and became an expert at long-exposure cityscapes. His first foray into light painting was on a trip to Dartmoor where it was pitch dark. Liam uses the lightweight and affordable DJI Mavic 2 Pro as his primary drone platform, fitted with his own home-made high-powered LED lights, and shoots primarily with a Sony A7R V with the 24-70mm G Master. Each of his shoots may require several flights so he carries plenty of spare batteries, and his multiple light-painting passes are later combined into a single image. He calls his drones his “super abled” assistants – they can “run” further, faster and higher than he can, freeing him up to stay with the camera, adjusting settings on the fly. He is currently working on a project celebrating our frozen planet, with winter expeditions around the globe. "Every shadow exists because of the light" This thought is what keeps me going through long nights. As a night photographer and light painter, I often find myself having to sacrifice daylight. Travelling in winter with 18 hour nights, or simply sleeping through the day to recharge, there is always the mental struggle of missing out on incredible sunsets or not being able to look out towards the horizon. The darkness is a lonely place, but once I start my proccess I remember that it is also my friend. A canvas that I can use to paint my wildest imaginations. Rule of thirds? More like rule of ‘I hope this turns out okay’... 30+ frames, captured over several hours. There's always some unknowns when stacking the images together. Seeing this finished piece fills me with a so much relief. Does location matter??? People preach online that a good photographer can take good photographs anywhere. There is truth to this statement. A good photograph can make most places work and get the best out of them. But just like the gear debate, if you give the same photographer exceptional tools and ingredients, they'll be able to cook up something truly magical! I was working on a photo project this summer and finished shooting 1 day early. I knew that this rock formation was somewhat close by, so made a detour on the drive home. One all-nighter of non-stop hiking and shooting later, and this is now one of my favourite locations of all time! The amount of character that these cliffs have, from the different bands of colouration, to the trees perched on top... Spectacular!!! What do you think?
