Posted @withregram@biddyconnor Over ten years ago Erik DeLuca and I met at a residency at the Atlantic Centre for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. With a shared love of the beach, thrifting (op shopping) and sounds of all kinds. Not long after I returned, Erik sent a trio of songs for The Letter String Quartet to perform: Window, Bee, Want. These recordings have been sitting on the shelf since 2019 and it is so great to get them out into the world. This Friday August 4, TLSQ will be performing these songs at the Castlemaine Uniting Church. Lizzy Welsh and I will also be launching our new duo Light Burst (Biddy Connor & Lizzy Welsh) - single launch . We are gathering all our strange bowed instruments for this one - baroque of all kinds, some stroh viola and saws. These songs have been coming together in Castlemaine, Lizzy’s hometown, since around May this year. We are working towards an album release in October. Come along if you are nearby - v-line trains are cheap these days. Show from 6pm-7pm, then pizza! Window (EP) Music & Words by Erik DeLuca Recorded by Neil Thomason at Head Gap Mixed and Mastered by Jed Palmer - Composer Performed by The Letter String Quartet Steph Ohara & Lizzy Welsh on Violins and Voice Biddy Connor on Viola and Voice Zoë Barry on Cello and Voice

Melbourne has streaked past Sydney in the population markings on the doorframe. We have almost reached a height of almost 5 million! Because there are so many of us and we seem to be ever more populous, TLSQ & Rachael Paintin have decided to extend the Nicholas Building audio experience, All That You Hear Is All That is Heard, until the end of the year. Hopefully this is enough time for everyone in Melbourne and everyone visiting Melbourne can experience the wonder of the Nicholas Building. It is still FREEEE. To listen, make your way to The Nicholas Building, 7 Swanston St, Melbourne VIC 3000. Take the stairs or the lift up to the first floor and follow the linktree in the bio. Please note the experience is designed to be listened to from the Nicholas building and is best experienced through headphones. This event is presented by the Nicholas Building Association with support from Missing Persons. Funding from the City of Melbourne arts grants and Creative Victoria workers fund have made this project possible. The initial development was generously funded by Chamber Made through their Little Operations program in 2019.

TLDR - We made an audio walk for the Nicholas Building and you can access the link in the bio when you are in the building. Get in there - it is an amazing space. Back in late 2018 I got an email from Rachael Paintin about The Letter String Quartet working up a performance for Nite Art in the Nicholas Building. Rachael had seen our performance of TLSQ x ASMR at the Festival of Live Art and was inspired to curate a project with us. Fast forward through time and space and many iterations, we have created an audio walk for the fabulous Nicholas Building. Thank you Rachael for the sowing the seed of this idea and then bringing it to life with me. Through postponements, changes and the exhaustion comes from that. I’m so proud of what we have created together and now it is out in the world. The link to the full walk is now available in the bio. Enjoy it from Level 1 of the Nicholas Building via your own smartphone and headphones. Big BIG Thanks also go to Steph O’Hara: for his genius creative coding on this project and excellent playing, Lizzy Welsh & Zoë Barry for beautiful playing, improvising and inspiration: I could play with TLSQ EVERYDAY, Lou Klerks at Missing Persons, Dario at the Nicholas Building Tenants Association, City of Melbourne, Creative Victoria, James Cecil - for that amazing recording in a tram in Macedon and still being so patient with my time vortex, Takeshi Kondo and Alex Sibbison for helping document the launches and other adventures in the building. This is a work that will change and grow over the coming months. Thank you to all the tenants of the Nicholas Building, past, present and future. Thank you for keeping the city creative. Special thanks to the following people for sharing your stories: Anna Varendorf, Bryan Graydon, Dario Vacirca, Emile Zile, Gail Smith, Ian George, Isobel Knowles, Jason Patterson, Jeremy Ley, Jose Zarpan, Julieanne Axford, Lou Klerks, Louise McDonald, Nell Fraser, Robyn Annear, Robyn Bunting, Stephen McLauglin, Van Sowerine, Victoria Mason, Vikkhi Blackthorne

An important repost of a repost. The pro forma letter is in our links. Please take the time this weekend to read and email the ministers listed so that we can grow as a community with the Nicholas Building thriving. ・・・ "After three months of hard work and negotiations, last night the State Government informed us that our community did not fit their criteria for support, and they would not loan us the finance to purchase the building. Our Case demonstrates a sustainable model which would see our community thrive and transform into a fully-fledged, intentional creative precinct with subsidised studios, an expanded arts and cultural program, and new multi-purpose spaces that the community could use to gather and host activities with the broader public. This would generate $50m in community benefits and could be achieved largely through a loan from Government paid back over time. This is a once in a generation opportunity and would stimulate the vitality, culture, and economy of our city as we attempt to recover from the impacts of Covid-19. In short, the community could have owned this building outright in as little as 30 years, with a profoundly small impact on the taxpayer dollar. We know that the State Government has the capacity to support this cause. We have until Monday morning to try to change their minds… We are asking you to please write directly to Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Creative Industries Danny Pearson, Premier Dan Andrews, and Treasurer Tim Pallas. We have attached a proforma letter (There is a link in the profile), along with the minister’s contact emails below to help make this process easier. Please write today or over the weekend. We need to ensure the message is heard loud and clear by the State Government: SAVE THE NICHOLAS BUILDING CREATIVE COMMUNITY. Every voice counts and we have thousands who have supported this Campaign for the Future of the Nicholas - please be a part of this effort."

Take a tour through the Nicolas Building on today’s ABC episode of Blueprint. Featuring music that TLSQ made about this building in 2019/2020. What a fascinating place! Find out how you can support the tenants of the building as it comes up for sale for the first time since the 70s. Imagine how we would all benefit if this amazing and thriving hub of artists and local businesses could continue on into the future. Link in the biosphere to the radio show and to the NB website where you can sign a petition and donate. #savethenicholas #melbournehistory #blueprintforliving

It’s week two of lockdown now and one week since we released two interactive web videos from our project “all that you hear is all that is heard” into the digital ether. These works were created using interviews gathered in 2019 from tenants of the iconic Nicholas Building in Melbourne’s CBD This week we have been thinking about all the amazing artists and creative businesses who lease spaces in the Nicholas Building and what a blow these times could be bringing to their livelihood. If you are looking to support our local economy take a virtual exploration of the Nicholas Building Tenants. There you will find artists of all kinds; designers, tailors, milliners, magic potion purveyors, animators, illustrators, gallery owners, jewellery makers, video editors, architects, tattoo artists, sculptors, writers, deep thinkers and focussed tinkerers. @nicholasbuilding We need creative ecosystems like The Nicholas Building to thrive in this new world. TLSQ had intended to present a 2020 live season of “all that you hear is all that is heard” that travelled through the Nicholas Building; with a final movement taking place in Missing Persons on Level 4. Great thanks to support via the City of Melbourne COVID-19 Arts Grants. “Always the Same” and “Layer Upon Layer” were created remotely during isolation 1.0 2020.
