Yesterday
@adam_guy_artist invited me back to give a “10 Months in the Industry” talk to L4 and L6
@fc_bcu students. It was great to be back 🎓💫
I created and presented a deck exploring the key advice that supported me in securing two full-time industry roles since graduating last summer, something I’m incredibly grateful for.
The content in the deck is knowledge I have gathered over the past four years through talks, lectures, personal experience, and conversations with industry professionals.
I’m by no means a careers advisor, but this is what’s been useful to me, so I wanted to pass it on…
Networking: without people, connections, and community, entering the industry is extremely difficult. I realised this early on after attending local events in my first year. It quickly became clear how small the creative industry is and how valuable that can be. Many of the opportunities I’ve had have come from people I’ve met, conversations I’ve been part of, and recommendations. My advice is to go to events, get involved, and be part of your local creative community whenever you can.
Opportunity: the creative industry isn’t linear. There’s no single route in. Staying open, curious, and adaptable is essential, especially at the start of your career. With so many people applying for the same roles, it’s important to position yourself as someone who can bring value in different ways.
Portfolio: this has been my biggest asset in securing work. Platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn have been key for sharing both finished pieces and work in progress. Not everything needs to be polished. Consistently showing what you’re doing keeps you on people’s radar, which is particularly useful if you want to be found by recruiters!
Thank you again
@fc_bcu , for having me! I wish you all the best of luck for the future! 🪩🐆
