‘Write the book you want to read’ is Chapter 3 in Steal Like An Artist by @austinkleon
When i was fresh out of college and trying to make it as an illustrator i looked high and low for information that would help me start my career.
I wanted a practical, no-nonsense guide that would give me the steps to go from a beginner to a professional.
15 years later, i’d gathered enough information and experience to write the book i needed when i was starting my career.
My book isn’t art. It’s not really even about art. But it gives you the steps to turn your art into a career.
It’s the book i wanted to read, and you can read it too.

Bodil and I talked about her illustration career in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago.
If you’re an illustrator, I’m sure you’ll find this conversation helpful.
I had the chance to work with @theillustratorsguide on some illustrations for his blog, where he shares a bunch of great advice, industry insights, and guides to help illustrators find their way. I had a blast creating this set of characters and being part of a project that I truly believe is going to help our creative community.
I’ve been feeling quite lost lately, wondering where our industry is headed, and how to stay focused on what really matters in my own creative practice instead of getting swept up in the sea of negative “what ifs” that hang over our community like a dark, mysterious cloud. James is doing amazing work to make sure our craft and the people who are passionate about it, have the tools we need to make it through this chaotic time.
Check out his account and blog. I’m really proud to be a part of this project. Thanks for the opportunity, James 💛
If you’re an artist struggling to grow on Instagram, I’ve got 5 steps anyone can follow to go viral.
Anyone can do it, and it doesn’t mean selling out or compromising your art. It just means playing the social media game.
