โ€œJust To Be Near Youโ€ 12โ€x18โ€ 3 layer screen print using hand drawn and film collage exposures. edition of 14 An image that had been sitting in my sketchbook for a while, a drawing Iโ€™d been chipping away at for the past few months, now finished. Imitations of past authority grow flimsy under pressure, crusades crumple on further inspection, cheap facsimiles of nobility and militant control become spectacle. These prints will be available with many other works at REMFEST, happening tomorrow in Remington! Come by, say hi!

Announcing DOORS AT SEVEN: posters and process 2023-2026 This book traces three years of posters and fliers created for Baltimore, Dc and beyond, showcasing sketches, commentary, influences and unused/never before seen concepts that inform the creation of these works. This book is a celebration of the organizers, collaborators and artists that make these great events happen, and ensure that work is seen by those who will love it. 50 copies are available now for the first run on my site, with copies available at @atomicbooksbaltimore and @micastore1826 (more to be announced shortly) This book is published by Big Machine Works @bigmachineworks , an independent publishing imprint created by @thehowley with the mission of showing the scraps, sketches and internal mechanisms that drive process based work. Thank you to my mentors, friends, family, and all those who have shown up for the great art happening in charm city. Love, Jay Howley Third slide is the book on my coffee table for reference if you also own a coffee table and plan on putting the book on yours. Works great. (The book underneath mine on the coffee table is by @micahewood and @christopherjchester :) ) Hashtags (obligatory): #baltimore #posterdesigncommunity #poster #posterart #primussucks

OREOL This was a small batch of shirts I made in preparation for last weeks REMFEST, and found the demand did not meet my supply. Preorders are now open for the reprint! Order form closes on June 1, donโ€™t wait on this! Printed in orange and black on an off-white/creme t shirt. For the casual fans who canโ€™t name a player but are more invested in the hot dog race than they have any right to be. Link to order is in my bio and stories! See you at the game!

Take a look! A spread from DOORS AT SEVEN, my new book available now. This was the process of creating a poster for Baltimoreโ€™s own @kenyattatheband , an ensemble working to celebrate the experience of live dance music. This book was made so I could critically reflect on my own processes, and note the little decisions made along the way to create these posters, highlighting the tangible and tactile processes that stem from exploration and play first and foremost. DOORS AT SEVEN: posters and process 2023-2026 is now available on my site and through select retailers.

The cover for DOORS AT SEVEN was intended to be a wraparound, with the image on the front and back as a single continuous piece. I wanted this cover to be a collection featuring the library of characters and visual motifs that fill the book, and decided to work in a way that would spur new discoveries while also being an accessible medium that could be reworked and edited in a way that would leave little artifacts and pentimenti behind as the image was built up. This drawing was done in pencil, with small touches of white out and micron. The final product is soft and tactile, a visual departure from the graphic sensibility showcased in the book, but also speaks to the ways in which revision builds out ideas from skeletal strokes and doodles to something immersive and intriguing. DOORS AT SEVEN: posters and process 2023-2026 is now available on my website and at @atomicbooksbaltimore and @micastore1826 #pencil #pencil #pencil #pencil!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the opening reception of the MICA MAT Graduate exhibition this past Friday. This is my favorite exhibition that I have put together in my time at the institute, and I feel speaks to all aspects of my practice as artist, student and educator. Thank you to all of the artists in the exhibition and my amazing friends, family and mentors in my life who have pushed me and supported this work since its inception. The show is on display from February 20th-March 8, with my works on the lower level of the leidy-Riggs gallery in the Lazarus Building. This show centers process, showing iterative sketches parallel to finished pieces. It is a celebration of practice, imperfection, and a dedication to personal growth as a central tenet to meaningful artmaking. Thank you to @ectprints for sharing the space with me and delivering beautiful, thoughtful works to this space. Artist statement: Showing Your Work Artmaking serves me as a practice of mindfulness and presence, of reflection and active revision. Drawing offers me a place to store the noise, sorting and making sense of tangential thought. Individual strokes coalesce into a cohesive body. Disparate ideas collide and bleed together when placed side by side. Centering mindful repetition through practice builds muscle memory and makes connections through trial and error. These are the dispositions that have informed my work. Through teaching, I have wanted to know more about the ways in which I learn, what engaged me as a student, and the lessons I still hold with me today. Teaching inspires inward reflection about oneโ€™s own learned lessons, and the dispositions with which we approach solving problems and navigating the world. This transfers over in my approach to teaching, where Iโ€™ve learned that practice makes perfect. The classroom can offer space for students to spend time refining their voice, to swing for the fences and fail in brilliant ways. The planning stage informs the process. Iterative approaches to artmaking help build up ideas by adding material and detail as flesh to a skeletal concept or idea. Thank you again, as always, more to come โค๏ธ
