Raised in New Jersey, Evan Tomljanovich is an artist and printmaker currently residing in Baltimore, Maryland. He obtained his BFA in Printmaking and is currently pursuing his Masters in Arts, both at the Maryland Institute College of Art. He creates a visual language unique to his own experiences, drawing inspiration from German expressionism, cubist form, and the New York City pop art movement of the 1980s. His own experience in Baltimore, New York City and a variety of travel and commuting shaped a fascination with metropolitan spaces that continues to inform his work now. Tomljanovich uses printmaking to explore his own struggles with growing up, feeling unstable in an ever changing world, and the things that ground us when we don’t feel fully like ourselves.
Come see In The Shadow Of The Machine and other works by Evan in Paper Route at Red Giant. We’re open 1-4 on Saturdays and by appointment - there will be a closing reception for the show on Friday, December 5th, from 5pm - 7pm.
Yield, drypoint and state proof animation
-
One of my first explorations from this year, Yield was a delve into drypoint for the first time in a long time. While working, it became a reflection on a moment of quiet within the hectic nature of travel, inspired by the shapes of transit signs. Also includes one of five animations created for the Back and Forth.

I am a creature of habit and a maker of to-do lists, sketchbook pages filled with ever-growing tasks and frenetic scratches of pencil and pen. My reliance on the structure of the everyday has become apparent to me, my mood dependent on repetition and carefully crafted routine. When this routine is disrupted, I begin to spiral and feel less like myself. This necessary disruption of regularity is a byproduct of moving and growing up, a back and forth between physical landmarks and nebulous daily structures that eventually eats away at my energy. My work depicts figments of memory throughout the back and forth per the staging of a faceless traveler amidst abstract cityscapes. The figures I depict exist enacting regular routines of travel in metropolitan monoliths or entangled within one another. The buzz of transition disrupts their form, while physical proximity and the routine of movement anchor them back together. The final result is abstract yet illustrative, intuitive yet intentional —a scramble of opposite energies colliding. The Back and Forth is a reflection on the complexity of memory tied to temporal spaces, the isolating sensation of change, and the constant scouring for inklings of familiarity.

Parallel Tracks
intaglio and screenprint
One of the first prints from this semester I was truly happy with. Thinking thoughts about travel, commuting, anxiety, and the moments that ground us throughout it all.

This is the print that I’ve spent the majority of this summer working on while interning at the wonderful @shoestringpressny ! I’ve gotten a great experience out of my time there and thank them greatly for the guidance and space to get some prints made.

This particular piece is a stab at a couple of things, from drawing more, to more multi-plate etching, to combining my figures with my abstraction, to covering the subject matter of travel and the haze of a commute. There’s still some more color tests to be done and things to fix with it but it’s in a state I’m quite happy with right now. More to come!
A personal favorite from this semester, SANDWICH! was made based purely on my love for a late night sandwich. I love sandwiches. I believe a good one can fix most bad moods. Include is the original digital mockup and some closeups of textures I thought were neat! This was a 5 layer reduction woodcut with some stenciling done for my illustrative print class with the wonderful @evawylie

A collection of experimentation with abstract aquatint goodness from my last semester. Swipe for some tests with multi-plate printing! Definitely more to come from these next year.

a foray into reductive screenprinting in what i think was my most successful print in my screenprinting class this semester! this print focuses on the concept of a scramble in jiu jitsu where there is no solid position within a roll. i found connection when relating this to my personal feelings surrounding finding an anchor and a home during my time at college. this work was an attempt to ground some of my more abstract textural work within figures that represent a constant for me.
even when everything is changing constantly, martial arts is always home.

“in flux”
this is a three color screenprint of scanned textures from an abstract copper etching i had done before hand. the end of this semester brought explorations into the deteriorating image as its reproduced. this was the culmination of my work for the semester in print seminar and im pretty proud of it. there’s a lot more to do, but here’s some stuff to look at for now. i have a couple other etchings from this semester ill post in a week or so once finals ease up. hooray!

RAT KING! A first print for my Relief Printing class. I’ve enjoyed drawing tangles and things in a mess of overlapping pieces before so I thought a rat king a fitting challenge of knots. I had intended for the green to be grosser and more putrid, but it turned out too nice. I’ll have to try again soon.

Murder Lunch posters created as a first print project and for my fantastic training partners over at @guardian_baltimore . Mid-day jiu jitsu is always the best.
The lettering layer is a copper etching followed with a scanned and sized up drawing from my sketchbook that was then printed on top. I’m excited to do more with multiple print process fusing into one finished piece this semester. More work to come very soon!
