Apart from taking photos, I sat down to play quite a few games yesterday at Washington Square Park. It was unavoidable. I did quite well and really enjoyed myself, winning about a dozen games before finally losing a close one to this guy, who turned out to be the current New York State Chess Champion, William Graif, rated 2207.
He runs a YouTube channel under the nickname “The Gambit Man,” and he’s also into chess boxing, so I might photograph him again before I leave, this time at the boxing gym.

Two of the hardest competitive sports in the world converge as @unitedchessboxing hosts its Team USA tryouts at @outboxnyc .
The best of both worlds collide as current team members @thegambitman and @jamescantychess fight to defend their spot, with special guest WGM @jenshahade making an appearance.
Leaders of the tryouts, deathly skilled in both boxing and chess, will go on to compete in the Chess Boxing World Championships in Serbia later this year. Stay tuned for more hard hitting action!
