THIS COMING MONDAY! Join us for the next Canadian Wool Coffee House Monday, March 30 6pm Central Time (please check your own time zone) lasting for approximately 1 hour. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Kathleen Vaughan of @thefutureiswool (La laine : MatΓ©riau d’avenir) research project. The Future is Wool is an on-going research and creation project exploring the personal and planetary benefits of wool – emphasizing Canadian wool and celebrating wool from around the world! Through studio practice, collaborative art-making, and public outreach, we are celebrating the wonders of wool. Beautiful, ethical, and biodegradable, wool is an extraordinary material for sustainable art and design. Wool is just 1% of the world textile market but deserves to be so much more! Too much of the Canadian wool β€˜clip’ gets discarded before it can reach its great potential, but awareness-raising and innovation can help change that. A centrepiece of The Future is Wool is our stitched wool tapestry, which, in multiple panels, will tell a people’s history and propose some positive futures for wool. Learn more about this fascinating project and how you can get involved at this month’s coffee house. Monday wools from our studio session 🌿 Seen here, how we as a team take turns on our embroidery frame. We start with a ritual of setting up the space, frames, tying knots at the edges and mutually deciding on which area each one of will continue to stitch. With some laughter, giggles and sometime serious discussion over colour, form and textures Project lead @kathleen.sheila.vaughan RA team @gen_larousse @sharmistha_kart @pramilach @laine.leau @fer____su

For The Future is Wool project, this is our first panel, which we have envisioned as a team. Community members from the ages of 5 to 90 have contributed their hands along the way. Our aim was to launch the project and work with locally farm-grown natural sheep-colour wool, as well as naturally dyed wool in various counts and thicknesses for testing. Along the way, we learned about the fibre and the stories we want to tell through our upcoming panels, highlighting our learning about various sheep breeds. We also explored ways to incorporate hand drawings and hand embroidery, with the help of technology to trace the blue lines. Now we are in the phase of knitting the yarns, connecting all the dots, and getting ready for the next panel, which we will be bringing to @landmade_fibre Fest in March in Toronto. Keep watching this space for more updates. Valorising Canadian local sheep wool, while also sharing sheep wool stories from elsewhere.
