Washington Ensemble Theatre collectively decries the active genocides that have been waged against the people of Palestine, Congo, and Sudan. To date, around 60,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli state since October 7th, 2023 – a casualty count that doesn't factor in the nearly 80 years of violent occupation that precedes it. In Congo, since WWII, over 6,000,000 lives have been lost, often over the struggle for Congo’s mineral wealth. In Sudan, the RSF and allied militias have killed an estimated 150,000 people since the conflict began in April 2023.
While many of us have strived to operate in solidarity with the affected communities on individual levels, the act of making a statement as an organization is way past due. As a predominately white institution in the imperial core of the United States, we understand that we are amongst those complicit – our tax dollars fund genocide at home and abroad. However, we believe there is never a wrong time to loudly express our united and unequivocal support for life, land, and right to resistance for those under the foot of occupation. We hope we can continue to take inventory of the ways in which we participate in these systems of domination and unlearn them.
Words mean little without action. We have compiled a short list of resources that we hope friends of WET can use as a jumping off point for their own action. This list is not exhaustive, and we encourage you to do your own research on how to get involved with your local community. Remember, theatre is and will always be political. We will continue to use our platform, our art and our voices to struggle alongside oppressed people everywhere.
