In honor of #NationalPoetryMonth, I pulled one of my favorite projects I’ve directed out of the archive.
dark sKKKin (2019) is a poem film, voetry if you will, that explores society’s hierarchy of beauty through a lens of colorism. It highlights the necessity of confidence and self preservation for young Black girls.
This film premiered at a girls and women’s empowerment conference called 50 Shades of Melanin, where the focus was self esteem, hygiene, self love and confronting the negative effects of colorism.
Who taught you what was considered beautiful?
