Imagine standing on stage, surrounded by high schoolers from across the country, each one illuminated by gleaming lights; each one hoping for first place in one of the most prestigious science competitions in the nation. Imagine hearing your name called. This became reality for Delta High senior Connor Hill on March 10 when he won first place in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, earning him $250,000. Yesterday, @reptakac and I met with local students at @thedeltaprogram to discuss recently proposed legislation on cellphone use during school hours. This was a mutually beneficial discussion about the effects of modern technology in our education system, and how students benefit vs. struggle with this. We were so moved to hear their insights and will deliver their input in Harrisburg. Thank you to Delta’s Jon Downs for inviting us and putting this together so quickly! #servantleadership

(In the style of Stefon from SNL) New York's Hottest Club is... the Delta Winter Wonderland Craft and Vendor Fair, this Saturday from 10-3 at the Delta School building! This. Place. Has. Everything. Handmade gifts for everyone in your life. Local artists and crafters of all sorts. A silent auction. Delicious chili, mac and cheese, and sweet treats for purchase. A gift wrap station. "Uh, Stefon, what's a gift wrap station?" Oh, it's, like, that thing where anything you buy, or any gifts you already have that you bring with you, Delta students will wrap it for you? Perfect for the gift bag-dependent among us!

🌍✨ Kat and Paul’s Journey with Indigenous Education, Part 2 Kat Hoffman and Paul McCormick from Delta Program are on a meaningful journey with their Indigenous education course, launched in 2023. In the first week, they guided students in unpacking the danger of a “single story”: it often becomes the only narrative about a group of people. Students went on a field trip to examine artwork depicting local Native communities and some of the embedded lore in central Pennsylvania. This sparked discussions on Indigenous representation, with students noting stereotypes of Indigenous people as always “in harmony with nature.” 🖼️🌱 When Kat and Paul posted about their event on the school’s social media, they experienced some pushback due to their unintentional wording that disregarded Indigenous experiences, prompting them to think about the impact of language on Indigenous representation and awareness. Through this course, Kat and Paul became committed to expanding how they approach social studies. Paul reflected that he plans to “invite students to notice single stories in social studies texts (which are ubiquitous), and to present multiple stories in my presentation of historical events,” while Kat acknowledged her initial hesitation to reach out to the local Indigenous community because “I feared that we were doing this wrong, or that I wasn’t qualified, as a white woman, to be teaching about Indigenous lit, even as we centered Native voices and attempted to be transparent about our privilege.” 📚✨ Their course challenges myths in history by asking: “Who gets to tell stories? Whose voices are privileged?” Kat and Paul’s reflections remind us of the power of teaching that centers intersectional justice and embraces multiple voices. Kat and Paul’s Journey with Indigenous Education: Part 1 🌍✨ Meet Kat Hoffman and Paul McCormick from Delta Middle Program in State College, PA! As Kat says, they‘re ”just 2 teachers, doing teacher stuff.“ But what they’re doing is far from ordinary! Their social studies story began during the Thanksgiving celebration in Fall 2022, when Delta’s faculty started developing their program’s land acknowledgment. This sparked discussions on Native American texts and history, as well as world Indigenous stories. Inspired to deepen this focus, Kat and Paul then built a curriculum centered on honoring Indigenous voices and perspectives. In developing a course description for this class, they asked themselves: “Who are we to teach this class? Then again, who will do it, if we don’t?” Though Delta’s staff isn’t particularly diverse, Kat and Paul realized that they regularly incorporate the Anti-Defamation League’s curriculum, address microaggressions, and elevate marginalized voices in their humanities courses. Kat and Paul said: “We are trying to embody what Bettina Love (2019) talks about in terms of “challenging systemic oppression with intersectional social justice” (p. 19). By sharing their story, Kat and Paul hope to connect to educators far and wide, sharing the joys, learnings, and mistakes along the way.
