Named after Nevaeh Hernandez (1999-2023) a founding member of Sacramento’s first youth led street outreach team created in 2016. Nevaeh’s legacy will live on as a Street Leader forever 🖤

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Waking the Village, a nonprofit organization in Sacramento, supports homeless and housing-insecure individuals through various programs, with a unique focus on art at its Creation District as a means of expression and healing.
“We work to create a space for young adults to come that is really respite all rooted in creativity in the arts,” said Grace Loescher, Creation District director. “Everything we do here is through the lens of music, art, theater.”

We are thrilled to introduce our Creation District Artist of the Month, Anubis-Emerald (A.E Nox)! A multidisciplinary creator working in traditional and digital art, writing, and photography, A.E Nox brings its Black and Indigenous/Native identity, Agender and Xenogender experience, and Sapiosexual/Demiromantic orientations into a deeply personal body of work. As someone who has navigated disability, homelessness, stigmatization, and survived RAMCOA, its art holds powerful layers of truth.
Its multifaceted identities shape how it sees the world—through intersectionality, mental health, trauma, and the perspectives of multiple alters who contribute to its pieces. Often exploring themes that are dark, morbid, graphic, or emotionally intense, A.E Nox’s work reflects the realities it has moved through, sharing that it “didn’t go through life experiencing a lot of good or ‘light.’”
Blending textures, techniques, shapes, emotions, and synesthetic experiences, it creates scenes meant to evoke the feelings present during their making and offer others a window into how it experiences life.
We’re honored to feature A.E Nox at The Creation District. Its creativity and honesty deepen our community’s understanding of identity, expression, and the power of art.
Have you ever driven down a city street and seen the patch of earth in front of a building, turned into a foodscape amidst the concrete sidewalk? That’s what you will see at 13th & S, midtown Sacramento in front of Creation District’s Art and Wellness Space.
TSAVO had a dream of bringing the youth, who struggle with housing insecurity, the knowledge of planting and growing food. He and co-worker Caralie take them regularly to Three Sisters Garden in West Sac but he wanted to create it at ‘home’.
Miracle of miracles, the City granted permission and a tiny urban garden is thriving. Check it out!
We recently traveled to Nisenan Land to visit the brilliant people of @thecreationdistrict for an afternoon sharing of books and boxing, featuring Pancho Villa: World Champion, 1923. It was deeply moving to feel the welcoming spirit of The Creation District, and to feel excitement around our peoples’ struggles, languages & cultures ❤️🔥
What a rare honor it is to dive deeply into the interwoven histories of our peoples with @bernardjaames@kirbyaraullo & @bayaniart . It is special that we get to team up and offer such essential literary & martial arts offerings for our world today. Combining theory with practice, holistic wellness with combat readiness are all lethal ⚔️ and vital for our peoples’ liberation 🌻 from Falasteen to the Philippines, from Nisenan to Ohlone land, from Afrika, Turtle Island to Asia, all power to the people forever & always 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🇵🇸✊🏿✊🏾
Salamat @suka.babii and The Creation District for hosting us 🫶🏽

Throwback to our last Creation District Records Showcase! Since 2018, our creators have been writing, recording, and producing original tracks the world needs to hear. Once a quarter, they bring that magic to the stage — designing the lighting, creating flyers and visuals, and performing the music that tells their story.
Staff hold it down at the door and merch tables, local artists join in to collaborate, and every dollar raised goes right back into the hands of the artists who make it all happen. 🎤
Check out a few of our favorite moments from past and recent shows! 📸
What a magical day at ARTreach! ✨ Since 2019, our Creation District team has been bringing creativity on wheels through our Mobile Street ARTreach program — delivering art, joy, and connection to shelters, encampments, and youth programs across Sacramento. This week, we visited Waking the Village’s parenting houses, where families painted pumpkins, created autumn watercolor scenes, and made jewelry together. 🍂💛🎨 Throwback to our van!!
