Music Madness Flashback! Thank you to all the brilliant collegiate composers who submitted and The Durham Fellows for their performance of these modern compositions! This event poses the question: Who are composers writing music for? Themselves, the musicians, or the audience? Through a bracket-style tournament, the audience cast their vote! Congratulations to @victoriakingcomposes , an undergraduate student at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, concentrating in music composition with a minor in creative writing for her piece titled "Meanwhile". "I wrote “Meanwhile” while imagining two different yet simultaneous scenes. Both are social gatherings, dances of some sort, celebrating for the same reason, but in vastly different ways. One party is refined and elegant, operating within strict rules of etiquette and dancing in graceful forms, but meanwhile, there is a village dance where people hike up their skirts and dance without thinking. This piece is about that second celebration, where we can dance, play, and perform just for the joy of it." — Victoria King Her pieces have been performed and recorded by Ensemble Intercolor, the Balourdet Quartet, the Corvus ensemble as part of Fairbanks’ Summer Arts Festival’s “Composing in the Wilderness” program, and her orchestral premier in May, 2026 by the UNCSA symphony orchestra. Thank you to all participants! Until the next throw down.. Presented in Partnership with Carolina Performing Arts.
