Rick was my first assignment on The Mitchell’s vs the Machines back in 2017. It was through this task that I was introduced to Director @mikerianda and Production Designer @lindseyolivares . The first task on any movie is where I learn what is the most important to the Director. Mike had such strong instincts for character design, but the main thing I picked up from him was how much this movie resonated with him on a personal level. It’s difficult to describe but I felt like he had entrusted me with a part of himself. That made me want to work harder to make him happy. Getting the shapes, volumes, silhouettes, etc... was all critical. But mostly he cared about feeling routed in family. And not just any family, his own family. Scroll through to take a look at the amazing design work of @blitzcadet from the GROMMETS comic series. I really wanted to do the designs justice in translating them to 3D. I hope I did ok. There’s still a lot I’d like to do to give them even more of that illustrative comic feel. I might spam a few more posts of these guys. Some head shots and maybe a turn or two? Fans of the comic are saying GROMMETS would make for a sweet animated series. I agree but it would have to be with great care. Thank you, @lightboxexpo 2025! What a fun show. My favorite part, as always is reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones. Each year I get a renewed inspiration for art, animation, creation, and beauty. Walking the floor with my sons was the best. They were good sports as I locked into long chats. This year I had my younger son, Milo who I dropped off so he could spend the day with his girlfriend! “Dad, just drop me off here and don’t ask her any questions!” One of my favorite things was seeing my @animschool students, who traveled from afar to attend! Meeting them in person and seeing their passion grow is amazing. Special thanks to my son Ethan who braved the long line to get my Kpop print from @amithompson_h . I ow you one! Thank you LBX! There are very few things I can point to in my life and say that I was in the right place at the right time. Being a young teenage skate punk in the mid 1980’s is definitely one of them. And it just so happens that some of my favorite creatives made a comic that absolutely captures the essence of that era. Enter GROMMETS! This one really hit home. So naturally I had to sculpt these characters. Not to mention one of my all time favorite artists @blitzcadet did the art! Just when you think you’re old and forgotten your hero’s sweep in and bless us with this comic book magic. You guys… I can’t explain it but each time a new issue came out it was like being a kid again, reading a physical comic book. @rickremender I can’t thank you enough for this series. I sculpted these guys live during my @animschool demos for my class on Creating Characters with Character in ZBrush and Maya. I’ve got a few more of the GROMMETS crew in the works if anyone wants to see how these are made! #grommets #skateboarding #animation #zbrush #maya #charactermodeling
