Spending time with an organization that provides comfort, care, and support to families during challenging times was a great reminder that community is built through both mission and showing up for each other.

@thebreakthroughboard is thrilled to announce our 2026 Breakthrough Board Scholar!
Kaloyan Tsanov, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine, Ben May Department for Cancer Research, @uchicagomed who is focused on Pancreatic Ductal Carcinoma and how it commonly spreads to both the liver and lungs.
Dr. Tsanov’s research has discovered that a particular gene which is linked to metastatic progression and poor outcomes has a different effect on metastatic tumors, depending on their location. By better understanding the inactivation of this gene, Dr. Tsanov is seeking to provide new therapeutic targets for patients and also to shift how oncologists consider the metastatic site when interpreting and treating specific tumors.

Members of @thebreakthroughboard were privileged to attend the Organ Preservation and Survival in Head and Neck Cancer Symposium at @uchicagomed on Friday. Following lunch with a number of Board-funded researchers, they took in the New Approaches Session, led by Dr. Alexander Pearson.
As the Board prepares to make its allocation in April, this was a unique opportunity to learn about the latest discoveries in cancer research.
