Like, actually seen?
At the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade Diversity Leadership Council Summit this week, I asked participants this very question.
For me, it was about a year ago when @eugenie.hr asked me if we could connect over coffee. 🍵
As I walk into Starbucks in Yaletown, Eugene greets me with a big smile, then asks me a question that stopped me in my tracks.
"𝘑𝘢𝘺! 𝘚𝘰 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘞𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘣 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘵 𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶?"
I was floored.
Folks, I'm half-blind.
I can't see out of my left eye. Which means I have a pretty big blind spot on my left-hand side. Whenever I get the chance, I take the seat on the left so that I can see the person next to me properly.
And for the last 36 years, nobody has 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 asked me that question.
Yet, with that one prompt, Eugene both made me feel seen AND created the space to meet me where I am, without bringing up my visual impairment.

Leaders, inclusion and belonging may protected in our policies, but it 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴.
As we shape the workplaces we want to be part of, how might we be intentionally inclusive in our daily conversations?
