I am honored to join the Institute for Public Architecture on Governors Island as its new Residency Director. The program, one of the few architecture and design focused live-in residency programs in the country, presents an opportunity to imagine new architectures from one of the most unique, strange, beautiful and geopolitically complex sites in New York City. Over the last ten years I have participated in residencies around the globe, from the Arctic to Marfa to Nebraska...to this island - once known as Paggank. I look forward to seeing what might arise in this place - keep your ears to the ground to catch what rumbles from this Island, at Building Number 9- home base/communal design hub/remote design research station @the_iparch 🪐🚀⛴️🌅🛠️🔊 🖤🖤🖤 Beautiful photograph out in the field by @isabel_carolinaaa - Que poderosa me veo en esta luz✨❣️⚡️ POWERRR *** It is with great pleasure that the Board of Directors announces the appointment of designer, researcher, and educator Deborah Garcia as Residency Director of the IPA. Garcia joins the IPA at an exciting moment of growth. Her work in sonic spatial activation and public architectural installations, alongside the development of interdisciplinary research and pedagogy, will inform the evolution of the Residency program in meaningful ways. “My eyes have always been turned to where no one is looking — or to the things we can’t see or put name to. My work with sound and space is about amplifying what lies below and, even at a molecular level, to shake the structures that be.” Garcia said. “ I am excited to work alongside the radical explorers that take part in this unique residency program. The art of communal living and the lessons of communal experience are the future. This is a place to test those ideas. To live on this island is to rethink something much larger— to rethink our very approach to living together.” “We are delighted to invite Deborah to join the IPA family! Her valuable experience as a creator and curator brings new perspectives to the Residency program and I am personally thrilled to be working together. Welcome Deborah!” -Janet Fink, Executive Director

Next Wednesday, September 24th 2025, the Fisher Center is pleased to welcome Deborah Garcia to lecture on Loudspeaking Architecture. “Deborah Garcia is an architectural designer and researcher whose work focuses on reimagining everyday structures through multisensory activation. Her recent research developed strategies for using sound as an architectural medium and historical record. Loudspeaking Architecture will track a series of projects that use sonic activation and listening as methods for rethinking our relationship to space. Tracking across a series of interventions: a 9-foot tall sound tower, a 60-foot long folding wall, a 3-month long soundtrack, a 15-minute 87,000 sq ft sonic exhale—Deborah considers the ways in which buildings rumble with life, and invites us to listen in.” Please RSVP using the link in our bio!

@supa_system is a new form of adaptive and responsive infrastructure. It is a chapel of sound that supports people’s abilities to convene and find common ground through sonic experiences. 📸 @lkhare

THE WORLD IS A SUPA SYSTEM / THE SUPA SYSTEM IS A WORLDDDDD What a ride this project has been- fast and furious. The SUPA SYSTEM is a nearly 50-foot long Tri-fold structure that holds a powerful 9-point sound system within its modular and mobile frame. Pulling from a deep obsession with the theatrics and robustness of billboard structures, this project presents a new scale in my trajectory of spatial sound structures. It is A WORLD of its own- made possible by the DOPEST and most generous invitation @josephzealhenry made to me a year ago: I want u to come build a sound system- are u down?!!! And what a gift- many thanx to @josephzealhenry for this commission and collaboration, it has been a WILD and FUN ride, truly a labor of love. Joseph’s desire and vision to turn this fellowship project into something much larger is what it is ALL ABOUT: u want to build things for THE PPL and it has been my absolute pleasure to work with u on that 💙 Huge huge thank yous are DUEEE: To @lkhare for making the sickkkk graphics that wrap the project in a warm and vibrating aura of energy and power To @white.rabbit.audio a recurring collaborator in my work who brought his careful expertise to the systems core To @ursaconcept fabrication for making the thing THINGGGGG To @malakhaipearson for making us look GOOOOOD And to @harvardartlab for their generous support Scroll to the end for the billboard that started my obsession almost 10 yrs agoooooo! Now we got to turn this structure into an infrastructure for living and listening 🔊🫶🏽🔊

Introducing SUPA System with Joseph Zeal-Henry @josephzealhenry with amazing team @lkhare @white.rabbit.audio @jeandashpaul and support from @harvardartlab Built at a human-scale, SUPA System asks what music and sound can tell us about how we occupy spaces of power, and aims to inspire new ways of thinking about communal gathering spaces. A manifesto made physical, SUPA System cites far ranging influences to imagine how the vernacular of infrastructure could create new ways of living. Taking inspiration from the aluminium frame of commercial billboards, the modular and open source structure riffs on a plurality of architectural traditions to create a flexible installation that repurposes commercial infrastructure to foster collaboration.
