We are saddened to share that a fire has destroyed The Action Foundation’s headquarters. This space was central to our work, providing support, a sense of belonging, and opportunities for children and young people with disabilities, as well as their families. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the loss is significant. Our programs have been disrupted, and we have lost essential resources that support our daily work. We are doing everything we can to continue and rebuild, but we cannot do it alone. We need your support to recover and restore our capacity to serve. Last week, The Action Foundation was part of a convening of education leaders from Malawi, Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Kenya in the Daara Development Academy. The Daara Partners delved into a branding workshop by MIGHTY ALLY, teacher professional development sessions by peer organizations and RTI International, and discussions on scaling Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Initiatives led by USAID and other partners. Our Executive Director, Maria Omare, moderated a panel on the Needs and Experiences of Teachers with teachers from our Partner Schools and Muthoni Gakwa, CPA , the Interim Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer at Metis . The week ended on a high note with a learning visit to Joseph Kangethe Primary School, where the group interacted with learners, teachers, The Ministry of Education, and the Teachers Service Commission. #DaaraDevelopmentAcademy #EnhancingFoundationalLiteracyAndNumeracy Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Image descriptions Image 1: Team members from Daara Development Academy Partner Organizations, Better Purpose, and Gates Foundation posing for a photo Image 2: Left to Right: Teacher Irene from Joseph Kangethe Primary School, Teacher Flavia from Jamii Outreach Primary School, Muthoni Gakwa from Metis Collective, sitting in chairs in front of a projector screen, in a panel moderated by Maria Omare Image 3: Dr Asyia Kazmi, OBE, Global Education Policy Lead for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, holding a microphone in front of a screen Image 4: Dorothy Akinyi, Headteacher of Joseph Kangethe Primary School, standing in front of a whiteboard Image 5: Sheilah Lutta-The Ministry of Education, Julie Bélanger - Better Purpose and Daara Partners in the Joseph Kangethe Classroom Image 6: Daara Partners, RTI team members, and the Better Purpose team posing for a photo

At The Action Foundation, our work is anchored on three key pillars that guide our mission of improving the quality of life of children and youth with disabilities and building a more inclusive Africa. Working across 25 counties in Kenya, we partner with National and County Governments, Civil Society Organizations, and communities to strengthen systems and expand opportunities for children and youth with disabilities. The first pillar is enabling equitable access to services for children and youth with disabilities. Through our programs, we provide support using a life-cycle approach, from prevention and early intervention to childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, ensuring every child and young person has access to the care, opportunities, and support they need to thrive. The second pillar is knowledge generation for data-driven decision making. Through research, learning, and evidence generation, we help inform policies, strengthen programming, and contribute to solutions that create lasting impact for children and youth with disabilities. The third pillar is advocating for disability-inclusive and gender-responsive systems and policies. Together with National and County Government partners and Civil Society Organizations, we work to strengthen healthcare systems, improve inclusive education, and promote environments where every child and youth with a disability can participate fully and equally. These pillars are the foundation of our impact, shaping how we serve communities and champion inclusion every day. As we continue the Together for The Action Foundation campaign following the recent fire tragedy at our headquarters, we invite you to stand with us as we rebuild. Our headquarters remains an important coordination, logistics, and service delivery hub supporting programs that reach children and youth with disabilities across communities. Even in the aftermath of the fire, our vision and mission remain standing strong. This image is a powerful reminder of who we are and why we continue forward. While much of our headquarters was destroyed, the words that define The Action Foundation still stand beside the burnt building, symbolizing the resilience of our mission and the strength of the community we serve. For over 16 years, The Action Foundation has worked to improve the quality of life of children and youth with disabilities, driven by a vision of a fully inclusive Africa where every child and young person with disabilities can realize their maximum potential. What began in Kibera with less than $50 has grown into a movement reaching more than 40,000 children and youth with disabilities through health, rehabilitation, and inclusive education programs across Kenya, alongside partnerships with county governments and communities working to advance disability inclusion nationwide. The recent fire may have damaged our headquarters, but it did not touch our mission, our hope, or the children and families who continue to show up every day for support, therapy, learning, and belonging. Our teams remain on the ground, continuing programs and ensuring children with disabilities continue receiving the services they deserve. As we rebuild this critical hub that supports and coordinates our work, we invite you to stand with us through the Together for The Action Foundation campaign. Today, we honour and celebrate mothers everywhere, especially those raising and caring for children with disabilities with immense strength, love, and resilience every single day. Behind every milestone reached, every smile shared, and every child empowered, there is often a mother giving tirelessly of themselves, emotionally, physically, and financially, to ensure their child is seen, supported, and included. Their dedication is powerful, even in moments when the journey feels overwhelming. At The Action Foundation, we witness this strength daily, and it continues to inspire our work. Through psychosocial support, inclusive programmes, and safe community spaces, we remain committed to walking alongside caregivers and families as they nurture brighter futures for their children. This Mother’s Day is especially meaningful for us as we continue rebuilding after the recent fire tragedy at our headquarters. While we rebuild our physical space, our commitment to the families and caregivers we serve remains strong. Through the #TogetherforTheActionFoundation campaign, we invite you to stand with us in restoring hope and ensuring that children with disabilities and their caregivers continue accessing the support, care, and inclusive opportunities they deserve. Just a few months ago, our headquarters came to life, filled with laughter, learning, collaboration, and moments of impact shared with our community, partners, stakeholders, and children & youth with disabilities. These photos hold memories of conversations that inspired change, programs that empowered families, skills that were nurtured, and smiles that reminded us why this work matters. While the fire may have affected our space, it has not taken away the heart of our mission or the community that continues to stand with us during this difficult time. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and walked alongside us. As we rebuild, we invite you to continue standing with us through the Together for The Action Foundation campaign. Play has no limits. As @thelegofoundation marks 40 years of championing learning through play, The Action Foundation is honoured to join the LEGO Charity initiative as a partner in this global celebration. Through this collaboration between the @thelegofoundation and the @lego Group, around 18,000 LEGO Play Boxes will be distributed to partners worldwide, bringing the power of play to children in challenging circumstances. At TAF, these Play Boxes will directly support learners with disabilities in Kenya, making learning more inclusive, engaging, and joyful while strengthening creativity, cognitive, and social skills. Grateful for this milestone partnership as we work together to build a future where every child learns through play.
