Something is being built inside your mind, and you’re invited to watch it unfold.
Vancouver creative duo @the_automatic_message (Tanya Goehring @post_photography + Trevor Jacobson) are unveiling How to Make a Monster, their latest Artist-in-Residence project at @langaracollege with @langaraphoto program.
Their immersive multichannel installation follows a fluid protagonist facing seven inner voices: parental expectations, peer pressure, societal messaging, religious conditioning, and more. Highly relatable, if we do say so ourselves.
Along the way, the piece explores ways to transform negative self-talk into positive, empowering voices.
There are two free public events this month you won’t want to miss:
🎟️ Opening night: Wed, April 1, 6:30pm
🎙️ Artist talk: Thur, April 9, 6:30pm
📍 @langaracollege , Vancouver

If you’ve been following along on our social media, you’ll know that Trevor and I, working together as @the_automatic_message , are the 2026 Artists in Residence for Langara College. Since January we have been writing, planning and producing a new project and we are very excited to share it with the world!
“How to Make a Monster” is an installation that incorporates photography, sound, and video as equally vital components of a cohesive new media experience. This project dissects the messy, universal forces that create the monsters we carry inside - those internal critics, inherited judgments, and whispered warnings that shape how we think of ourselves and move through the world.
We would like to invite you to our opening reception and artist talk:
April 1: Photographer in Residence Opening Reception:
Location: T-Building Foyer, Langara College 6:30 pm
April 9: Photographers in Residence Artist Talk: Langara College T-Building Gallery, 6:30 PM

The Langara Photography Department is proud to present its 2026 Photographers in Residence, Tanya Goehring and Trevor Jacobson.
Tanya Goehring @post_photography and Trevor Jacobson are the creative duo known as The Automatic Message @the_automatic_message . They create surreal, emotional and immersive audiovisual experiences. Much of their work is psychological in nature and centers around themes of memory and the displacement thereof.
Throughout their residency from Jan 2026 - Apr 2026, Tanya and Trevor will be engaging with the Langara College community, offering lectures, holding office hours, mentoring students, and hosting studio visits.
Their residency project, 'How to Make a Monster', (working title) is an interdisciplinary, multichannel, immersive installation by The Automatic Message (Tanya Goehring and Trevor Jacobson). This project will dissect the messy, universal forces that create the monsters we carry inside - those internal critics, inherited judgments, and whispered warnings that shape how we think of ourselves and move through the world.
