Over the weekend, I lost a friend. And the games industry lost one of its true giants.
Vince Zampella changed this medium forever. His work shaped entire generations of players, from Medal of Honor to Call of Duty, from Titanfall to Apex Legends and beyond. Millions of people played in the worlds he helped create. They competed, bonded, escaped, and connected because of his vision.
But what I will always remember most is not the games. It is the man.
I knew Vince for decades. We were not in each other’s lives every day, but whenever our paths crossed at shows around the world, he always stopped. No matter who he was with or how busy things were, he made time. He said hello, gave a hug, and genuinely asked how I was doing. Those small moments meant more than he probably ever knew.
Vince was kind. He was present. He treated people like people, not titles or opportunities. That is rare in this business.
He was taken far too soon, and it is hard to imagine this industry without him. I am deeply grateful I got to know him, and incredibly lucky to have called him a friend.
Rest in peace, Vince. You will always be remembered. 💔
My amazing sister @deannalnelson gave me this LEGO set a few years ago for Christmas. We both grew up with the #Atari2600 so it meant a lot to get this. ❤️ I always meant to put it together but never quite got around to it. Fast forward to this year. While packing up my apartment for the move, I came across it again and thought, “That’s it. I’m doing this! FOR REALS!”
I asked my colleague @heymarcelperez if he wanted to help, and he was all in. We started on August 12 and built it bit by bit during breaks and lunch hours. Some weeks we couldn’t touch it at all, others we’d knock out a bag or two.
It became our little project. One piece at a time. One laugh at a time. We finally finished on October 16.
The best part? We started as acquaintances and ended as friends. Thanks for taking the time, Marcel. It was genuinely a pleasure building this with you. 🤜🏼🤛🏼
