I’ve been getting more into sharing more small pieces of “ground work” as I like to call it. Things that are not always as glamorous and long as fuller projects but just as necessary for developing my craft and learning as I grow.
Hopefully it also might also help inspire other creatives to do more as well. 🙌🏾
Make your outdoor videos better by doing this…⬇️
1. PLAN AND PREP AHEAD OF TIME ⭐️
Pre-production work and planning is critical for getting best results the day of. Gear needed, weather forecasts, start times, etc. You want to be efficient with your time as a team and your talent’s time.
2. COMPOSE YOUR SHOT ⭐️⭐️
Look at your full composition. Where is your subject positioned in your frame? What is the story being told and is your decision helping or distracting from telling it. You can do this in preproduction but sometimes may have to switch and adapt on set so be flexible.
3. LOOK AT YOUR BACKGROUND ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Choose clean, uncluttered backgrounds that enhance your subject. Avoid distracting elements that can detract from your video’s focus.
4. LIGHT QUALITY, QUANTITY AND DIRECTION ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Dial in your colour temperature when time permits. Control the light as best as possible. Diffuse or block out harsh light. If necessary, consider reframing, adding or bouncing light in the direction needed
5. DON’T TRY TO EYEBALL EVERYTHING ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In other words, learn to use exposure tools like histograms, false colour and vector scopes (bigger monitors help a lot with this).
