Building a kinder future together. Supporting animals in need, caring for senior citizens, educating underprivileged children, and empowering women to stand strong and independent. The Thackersey Foundation’s vision is rooted in compassion, dignity, and opportunity for all.
Creating a better tomorrow through compassion and action! Our CSR initiatives support Senior Citizens, Child Education, Healthcare, Animal Welfare, Women Empowerment, Green Initiatives, and more—driving positive change for communities and the planet.
Sometimes meaningful change begins with something very simple - knowing where to start.
At the India Animal Welfare Forum, Tanya Thackersey reflected on the importance of guidance and accessibility within the animal welfare ecosystem.
For many people who want to contribute, especially younger individuals entering the space, the challenge is not always intent but direction. Knowing who to speak to, where to learn, and how to meaningfully engage can often shape whether someone stays connected to the sector long-term.
As conversations around animal welfare continue to grow, so does the need for stronger pathways into the ecosystem through mentorship, collaboration, and shared learning.
This is part of an ongoing series from the Forum, revisiting questions and reflections that continue to stay relevant beyond the event itself.
What helped you find your way into the work you care about?

Shri. Maharshi D.K. Karve and Sir Vithaldas Thackersey: Visionaries for Women’s Empowerment
A progressive mindset can transform society, and Sir Vithaldas Thackersey was a living testament to that. Influenced by the tireless social work of Maharshi D.K. Karve, Sir Vithaldas Thackersey made a historic donation of 15 lakh rupees in 1920—a monumental sum for that era—to establish a dedicated space for women’s education. This visionary act led to the naming of the SNDT Women’s University, the first of its kind in India and Southeast Asia. Which is still supported by Thackersey Family.
The Thackersey Foundation is dedicated on taking this legacy forward, ensuring that the flame of empowerment through education continues to burn bright for generations to come.
