Happy Ambedkar Jayanti!
Shailesh Patne with his sculpture vocabularises Buddhist Thought & Aesthetics through a conceptual investigation and observation of objects he has come across as a Museum conservator. As an artist sculpture came naturally to him where the found object retrived from scrap yards and left in disuse around the city.
The Ambedkarite movement approaches Buddhist Aesthetics within the prism of a secular vision that privileges the many anonymous authors who have painted the caves of Ajanta and carved the motifs of liberation on the sandstones of the stupa. The Buddha’s teaching of compassion seen in the symbolic visual representations of the Ashokan empire that espouse liberty, fraternity and equality forms the theoretical manifesto for Patne’s practice. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s writing on history form a unique criticism of our lens as a society in contemporaneity that Shailesh attempts to stitch together in his works.
A shrouded microphone standing under a bronze cast gold-plated cloth spells out the hypocrisy of power when it speaks to us. A mauled globe represents the rotting geo-political realities of our world specially in the face of a genocide. A briefcased brain tells the story of the conspicuous consumption of our brains by a society that is pushing our attention towards social media. Art is unseen under record auction records, pr campaigns and trends of mimic men as the work of those marginalised by an unforgiving system have their voices muffled by the denial of access, is ignored. We have to restore our freedoms and the objects of our constitution as envisioned by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, in the spirit of restoration where in conservation laboratories across the world history is not revisited, rewritten but arrested from further decline and lessons are learnt of how to preserve, repair and seek a new future.

This *Ambedkar Jayanti* as a part of *Caste, Culture, and Aesthetics*, a Global Humanities Research Workshop at Stanford , I am pleased to invite you to a discussion on:
*When Look Becomes Touch: Intermediality and Aesthetics in Anti-Caste Films*

*Caste, Culture & Aesthetics* emphasizes the need for recognizing caste as a critical node for theorizing marginalized cultural-aesthetic practices. The caste system adversely affects more than one billion people across the globe, in South Asia and its diasporas around the world. As a marker of deep inequity, caste is woven into every aspect of social life. Despite this, caste-oppressed communities have historically nourished sturdy counter cultures comprising a range of sociocultural forms and artisanal practices. However, the relationship between caste and cultural production is under-studied. This workshop will investigate the ways in which the graded social hierarchy of caste informs dominant aesthetic standards and values. It pays close attention to the counter-cultural assertions of Dalit and other marginalized communities that demand an anti-caste revisioning of categories like art, aesthetics, and culture. The workshop will create a space of dialogue, access, and interaction between scholars and practitioners of anti-caste art and culture. Rather than separate the realms of practice and theory, this workshop finds points of contact and complementarity between creative and critical practice. This approach is inspired by the ethos of anti-caste art which consciously blurs the boundaries between art, activism, and philosophy.

Bhagwan Master, the owner of Swar Samrat Band, is my father and my greatest inspiration. As a student presenting my work in the Student Biennale Kochi, I feel deeply humbled and incredibly joyful that he came to see my work at the Biennale.
I am especially grateful that my entire family travelled from my hometown, Satana, to witness this moment. My mother’s presence means so much to me, and my elder sister—Dr. Rohini Sonawane @drrohinigangurde is the Radiologist played a crucial role in making this possible. She represents the strength and progress of our family, as the daughter of a band musician who believed in educating his daughters and supported their dreams.
It was also very special to have his grandson and granddaughters there, experiencing and enjoying the journey and legacy of their grandfather. To have three generations come together at my exhibition in Kochi is truly emotional and unforgettable.
I feel immense gratitude for their love, support, and belief in my journey.

Restituting Fragments of Evidence by Jihan El Tahri
Vivan Sundaram Memorial Lecture Series

We don’t remember: we rewrite our memories’- Chris Marker (Sans Soleil)
Images have become a battlefield. Investing in where they are held, who gets to access them, questioning what they contain, challenging their narrative, and who gets to decide their preservation or erasure are all significant political and cultural acts. Those once-forgotten and neglected images have succumbed to the fury of gentrification and are now very much in vogue with filmmakers, artists, and historians. The current debate on restitution opens a gap for us to question how the image became property and why European archives continue to claim ownership of our ancestral images. But can the archival images - given that they are still bound in their colonial shackles - be a true source of knowledge? Today, we have the means to challenge the remnants of the colonial structure, to shift the parameters of the future, and to resist the commodification of our past. - @jihantahri #jihaneltahri @kochibiennale
