2022 has been my first full season as a dad and I must confirm, keeping up your cycling and racing is tough. However, at no point I was considering hanging up the wheels and the things I learnt are motivation enough to keep on racing for another couple of years…
First, there is something like #lebenskilometer . If you have been diligent in doing your winter miles over the years, you’ll be fine with doing less and still improve.
Second, taking off a couple of days won’t hurt your fitness. It will even allow you to rest up and sometimes hit numbers that you haven’t been able to.
Third, do the weekly #standertfeierabendrunde . It will keep you sharp and motivated.
Forth, chamois time is me-time. You’ll need to appreciate it. It’s not a sacrifice, it’s a gift. You won’t have much more of it during the day. Why waste it on training, if it’s a chore.

It’s Giro queen stage today and that reminds me that it has been 10 years now since we did Pellegrino and Fedaia. We were on the way to L’Eroica and this was the toughest climb I had ever done at this point. That endless straight with double digit gradients still haunts me sometimes. Such good memories though! Had the chance to race the #bringafieszta during my holidays in Hungary. Really like this race for the atmosphere, the fun course and the long uphill sprint at the finish, but especially because it was the first and maybe only race I will be able to do this year. To know a place that you can escape to for a couple of days, that is guaranteed to lift your spirits during Berlin’s long winter, is one of the best things that happened to me. It’s not just the roads you ride and the people you meet, but the love for the sport of cycling that you experience. It acts as a great equalizer and makes this place so very chill. It was only a couple of days, but long enough to keep me happy until next time.
