In the image above I'm standing in front of my 6 paneled 84"h x 132"W x 3.25"D piece titled the "Veil".
Constructed of thousands of drinking straws in shiny black resin, Veil is teeming with objects…yet what fills it is little black voids that, mesmerizingly, threaten to suck the viewer in. At the same time, the various red and gold felted circular forms are intended to create a haptic response, the desire to reach for those soft points of brilliance amongst the darkness.
As one might discover in liminal spaces the tantalizing invitation of the beyond, so the bright velvet limen (literally “threshold") point to a state of being, as Richard Rohr put it, “betwixt and between.” He continues: “The bubble of usual order has to be broken by a bit of whimsy, holy uselessness, deliberate disruption or displacement, learning to walk in the opposite direction. In liminal space we sometimes need to not-do and not-perform according to our usual…patterns.” Veil's (almost) endless repetition of circle upon circle (a form that is found in much of my work) captures the thirst, the endless cycle of longing and yearning, that characterizes our lives on this side of “the veil,” this earthly plane, and the numinous moments when something breaks through from the other side.

Hoping your year is off to a Good Start!
This wall hanging is the latest in my Drawn From Dust series titled, "Dust Woven Through".
With rubbed tire treads scattered throughout and a subtle nod to domesticity via allusions to quilting, the juxtaposition evokes the tensions between our need to balance going forth into the world and returning to the comfort and safety of home.
We leave dust in our wake, whether on the road or as our endeavors are gradually reduced to mothballs.
And we ourselves are but dust.
If we can recognize these tensions and bigger questions of belonging and arrival-of seeking impact and seeking security-in our own narratives and in our own longings, we are better able to identify with those for whom the stakes of leaving home and trying to find home are much higher.
