Beginning in the early 1960s, Signe Stuart’s professional career has now spanned more than sixty-five years. Her approach to art making has always relied on experimentation and rule breaking. Using the materials and form of painting, she breaks away from the standard rectangle and concepts of framing. For the artist, a sheet of paper is a metaphorical slice of time and space, a context in which to construct ideas about the connections and intersections of consciousness with matter and energy. @signestuart.studio 💡Signe Stuart’s ‘Fold 3,’ is on view in our alcove gallery until June 6! © Signe Stuart, ‘Fold 3,’ 2017, acrylic and graphite on folded, mulberry paper, 23 x 41 in. folded, 23 x 57 in. unfolded #pieprojects #signestuart #minimalistart

This weekend celebrated the opening of ‘a new breath,’ Jill O’Bryan’s (@jillobryan ) first solo exhibition at Pie Projects Contemporary Art. Among the selected works are pieces from the ‘Lotus Drawings’ series, in which each petal is drawn within the cadence of nam-myoho-renge-kyo — the mantra of 13th-century Nichiren Buddhism — a chant that affirms the fundamental interconnectedness of all life. The finished works are not so much images of a flower as quiet records of breath, sound, and attention moving through the body over time. ‘Jill O’Bryan | a new breath,’ on view through June 6. 🪷 © Jill O’Bryan, ‘Breath Circle #9 (Lotus Blossom),’ 2025, pastel on Bhutan Mitsumata paper, 62 x 60.5 in. #pieprojects #jillobryan #workonpaper

Coming Soon to the Garden Gallery Govinda Sah ‘Azad’: Meditations Transcending traditional cloudscapes, London-based Nepalese artist Govinda Sah ‘Azad’s (@govinda_azad ) paintings capture the essence of the emptying mind. He achieves abstract canvases evocative of sublime imagery with opalescent tones and at times, streaks of smoke breathed onto the canvas like brushstrokes. In 2011, Jill O’Bryan (@jillobryan ) discovered Tonglen breathing, a Buddhist practice of compassion—breathing in another’s pain, transforming it in the heart, then breathing out love. From this practice emerged her ‘breath circles,’ a series that draws on the tradition of ensō, the Zen circle rendered in a single, uninhibited gesture symbolizing enlightenment, emptiness, and infinity. On featherweight Bhutan Mitsumata paper, each graphite mark follows the duration of a single inhale and exhale, repeated thousands of times. What begins as a gesture becomes an accumulation. Working with two halves of a piece of paper, O’Bryan allows the marks to pass through the surface: the upper sheet erodes as the drawings transfer onto the sheet beneath, revealing the shadow half of the circle. Sewn together with gold-leafed thread, the two halves resolve into a single circle, revealing wholeness out of absence. Each work is titled by its final breath count: a record of time, endurance, and attention. ➰Opening May 2nd, ‘Jill O’Bryan | a new breath’ Image: ©Jill O’Bryan, ‘Breath Circle #10’, graphite, Mitsumata paper, gold leaf thread, gold leaf, cholla blossom petals, 16 x 16 in. #pieprojects #jillobryan #breathdrawings #workonpaper

Known for incorporating collected and found materials in the collage making process, Dana Newmann says that making these recycled compositions is as much ‘a meditation as a reverie.’ → Explore other creations by Dana Newmann on our website. Known for his abstract hard-edge painting, Oli Sihvonen (1921-1991) spent his career analyzing the interplay between color, shapes, and surface. Towards the end of his career, he noted that his objective had always been to convey motion in two-dimension. 🔘❌➕⭕️ Image: © Oli Sihvonen, “Untitled,” 1980s, gouache on paper, paper: 14 x 9.25 inches. #pieprojects #olisihvonen #opart
