126 Keep On
The energy of 126 carries a devotion to humanity,
a quiet insistence on care, protection, and continuity.
My great-grandmother, Bettie Watkins Roberts.
Mother. Grandmother. Great-Grandmother.
Sister. Auntie. Mother-in-law.
Teacher. Mentor. Way maker.
She was many things to many people,
but at her core, she was a protector of life
and a breaker of curses.
Mama’s love was radiated.
It didn’t need to be explained.
It didn’t need language.
It simply was
felt in rooms, held in hands,
passed down like breath.
I am grateful to have been loved
and, raised in the care of such a powerful matriarch,
a woman built on love and discipline,
faith and follow-through.
Happy birthday to us, Mama Bettie.
I love you still, always.
*These are family archival photographs
taken by Mama Bettie and Aunt Linda,
found in the home they shared. Moments captured somewhere between school years, before summer break and during. My great-granny loved taking the Amtrak to Las Vegas once the school year wrapped. A ritual of release after pouring herself out. She taught for over 35 years in the Baltimore Public School System
@baltcityschools and was a proud graduate of Morgan State University
@morganstateu .🤎
The year is unknown, but the legacy is not.
