The Thesmophoria was an ancient, women-only festival dedicated to Demeter and Persephone. It served as a religious ritual and a social gathering—an enclosed space where women bonded, exchanged knowledge, and maintained collective life. Rooted in agricultural cycles, it traced the connections between fertility, gender, and the sacred, marking the continuity between life, death, and return.
In this event, Thesmophoria is seen not as a reconstruction but as an invocation: a speculative feminist archive unfolding through symbols, gestures, and remains. Drawing attention to what has been buried, fermented, or withheld—and how it might resurface.
We explore themes of femininity, loss, grief, and renewal, politics of care, rituals, and shared knowledge – moving through the symbolic realm of goddesses, treating the Thesmophoria as a changing field, not a fixed past.

Dear friends, I ll be super happy to see you tomorrow at the opening of Murderesses at @stateofconceptathens after 6pm. This is my last curatorial for State of Concept, after eleven years of programming and exhibition making that filled my heart with joy. The institution will be taking a new form in the coming years and I cannot wait to share more with you from 2025 onwards. For now come to enjoy the work of six brilliant Greek artists and their take on violence, femicide and the fight against patriarchy and stereotypes. This last project I had the utmost pleasure to curate with my colleague Konstantina Melachroinou @constmel — With Eleni Karakou, Mariela Ksilogiannopoulou, Malvina Panagiotidi, Eva Papamargariti, Miammy and a performance by Johna Sahpazis. We are happy to invite you to our upcoming exhibition “Murderesses” curated by Konstantina Melachrinou & iLiana Fokianaki with the participation of Eleni Karakou, Markella Ksilogiannopoulou, Miammy, Malvina Panagiotidi, Eva Papamargariti, with new and older commissions.
The exhibition explores the archetype of the dangerous woman - femininity that threatens patriarchy, imitating its violent means and tools in the effort of self-determination, salvation and emancipation.
The title refers to Alexandros Papadiamantis’ landmark book “The Murderess” of 1903, one of the most important novels of Greek literature and perhaps an interesting challenge for the feminist reading of patriarchy.
In the exhibition you will find narratives of violence, spells, sexual practices, caustic campaigns, medical trolley tables, and hybrid creatures that make us rethink the gender stereotypes that are reproduced not only in society but also in science.
