There is a passage in “Plantation Kids” by Keith Smith that describes Mike flying down the line at Hanalei bowl on a small surfboard when the famous waterman, Ben Aipa, dropped in on him. “In one fell swoop, Mike directed his board to the top of wave, careening off the lip, going up, over, around, and past Ben, leaving him in the dust to ride the white water.” That was back in the late 60s and Mike is still doing it, only on a wingfoil board these days.
