@templeprints exhibit Unfinished Baskets, seen here on this beautiful spring morning, finishes in a few days. The linocuts featured are an evolving series of prints that sit somewhere between research, material study, and finished work. Jamie says: “They draw on ideas and forms that continue to surface across my wider practice: structures that interact with natural forces such as wind and water, or in some ways act as visual references to the complex systems we move through and our attempts to control and channel them. The forms in the prints are drawn directly from the physical willow objects made while on a residency at Studio459 Tomar, capturing them part way through their making. The flag is scaled up from one of these linocuts — its movement in the wind in some ways echoing the intended use of the physical forms influencing the prints: shapes designed to catch wind or move through water, extending these ideas into a shifting, kinetic object much like many of my sculptures. During the residency, I became increasingly interested in basketry and working with willow. Surrounded by woven objects in the house and studio, and wanting to explore the craft of basketry while making use of leftover willow available. I began experimenting and reverse‑engineering baskets and other woven forms to work out their construction and some of the techniques used to make them. The slow, deliberate process of carving the lino blocks became a way of actively committing basket‑weaving techniques to memory: translating the gestures, patterns, and sequences of weaving into carved marks. They are ‘sketches’ of the physical objects; prints that carry traces of that material process and ground themselves in the movements of new skills developed during this period of research.

“Unfinished Baskets” by @templeprints Jamie is an artist, educator, and curator with a practice grounded in relief printmaking and wood carving. His recent projects explore the interplay of dynamic systems — environmental, social, planetary, and human made — and how these structures influence our lives and surroundings. Informed by research, material exploration, and hands-on experimentation, his work opens up conversations around sustainability, ecological awareness, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Of the flag he says: : “The flag is scaled up from one of the linocuts showing in the board — its movement in the wind in some ways echoing the intended use of the physical forms influencing the prints: shapes designed to catch wind or move through water, extending these ideas into a shifting, kinetic object much like many of my sculptures.”

Back home now after a really lovely, restful and productive residency with @studio459tomar in Portugal. It was an amazing two weeks away, and so rewarding 🥰 Thank you Mark, Joao and Poppy for hosting me, and showing so much care and support for me and my art practice. My time was filled with the perfect mix of experimentation, discussion, reflection, making, developing, exploring and sight seeing. I hope I can return soon to this beautiful place with the most amazing people xxx Thank you @selenachandler for sharing your basketry knowledge and skills. Learned so much from you in a short time and can’t wait to see where my new skills take me/us! 🧺 And, thank you @karolina.glusiec for always being the best and most inspiring friend. So happy to have found some meaningful time to hang out and be on another residency together 🤗 Check out @studio459tomar residencies, would highly recommend to any creative practitioners looking for space and time to reflect on their work in a no-pressure, inclusive and rural setting ☀️ Much love x

Beech Wind Idols I had an amazing time making these sculpture this spring/summer out in the beautiful glen on the Kelburn Estate. It was a long, slow process, working in situ with green wood from fallen trees, carving by hand with simple tools and ancient techniques. It took many hands alongside my own to hew these from one big log of beech. Thank you so much to everyone who helped carry, cut, carve, burn and install. I love you all. And thank you to @marinareneecemmick and the whole Neverending Glen team for the opportunity and support you gave throughout the making and installation of these for this summer’s @neverendingglen at @kelburnparties 🥰🥰

Introducing Jamie Temple 🌱@templeprints 🌿 For the Neverending Glen Arts Programne 2025 Future relics of wind turbine blades lie strewn about the forest floor. These are remnants of the future. Beautifully carved using traditional methods, in situ from trees felled during Storm Elewyn, these charred relics stand over 6 feet tall, offering a resting place or pause for contemplation, of what was, is and will be.  Jamie Temple is an artist, educator and curator with an artistic practice grounded in relief printmaking and wood carving. From these mediums, he creates unique works on paper, carved wood sculpture, and mixed media installations. His artistic inspiration stems from a deep fascination with both the built and natural environments we inhabit, traverse, and shape. Recent projects, exhibitions, and works reflect the intricate interplay of chaotic and dynamic systems and structures that shape our existence – whether environmental, social, planetary, or human-made. Informed by research, material exploration, and experimentation, Temple’s artworks serve as catalysts for dialogues around sustainability, ecological awareness, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Through art making, he hopes to spark meaningful discussions about the complex relationships between humanity and the natural world. By exploring themes of sustainability and our interdependence with the environment, he seeks to inspire viewers to contemplate their own role in shaping the future of our planet.

I had such a great time last week at Daydream Nation #5 at @therumshack !! Thank you so much @jilllorean for playing a beautiful live set and trusting me to add some live visuals to your awesome music :) Here are a few snaps of some of the monoprints that made up all the animations made for the show. If you wanna have a go at animating monoprints then come along to our workshop at The Glad Cafe @thegladcafe this Saturday, where @karolina.glusiec and myself will be taking inspiration from the music and scores of Mark Mothersbaugh to create some monoprinted animations set to music! Still a few spaces left, check out @dept.con.temporary or @daydream.nation2024 for tickets and info.
