Coven was mega inspired by this and last year's financial breakdown of one of our favorite local yearly events, Ressonance, and decided to make a breakdown of our own to show you how much money Coven made and paid out to artists in April!
As many of you know April was Covens month curating
@myspace.phx which means, because we're crazy we had a show almost every day there as well as several shows/residencies at
@central.records up the street.
In April we had 27 shows across 2 venues and 72 artists perform/individuals host events.
This is what we made!
$3094
This is what we paid out to artists!
$3044
This is what it cost us to plan, book, promote, and run those shows!
$0
At Coven we belive the quickest way to strengthening scene infrastructure is booking as many locals as possible and being sure to pay them first before ourselves.
We feel that volunteering our time and talents to bring people out, put artists on, and support local buisnesses/venues helps invest in a stronger DIY scene Infrastructure and "economy"
Besides volunteering the way we achieve this is by making the vast majority of our monthly shows free with a suggested donation at door, or at least cheap and accessible ($5-$10 at most)
We then pay bands out via an even split from door donations/the door cut + bar cut.
Last month, we only had 2 ticketed non-NOTAFLOF shows and were still able to make a total of over 3k primarily from suggested door donations at free shows.
We do this to prove you dont need start up money/won't always have start up costs to book shows while still being able to paying out artists. That music, promotion, and especially DIY can be accessible endeavors DESPITE your financial barriers.
Someday we aim to generate additional income via grants to pay artists even more as well as members of our collective for our time, but until then we will continue to be a $0 overheard $0 cost to operate DIY outfit on wheels.
We post this in the hopes that it inspires, resonates, and helps shed light on how to build DIY infrastructure ethically when you're forced to work with no budget. (because times are tough but art and music stops for no one)
DIY OR DIE!
Love you all ❤️
