New CJS signing Ted Morcaldi! Proudly hailing from New Haven in the USA, Ted Morcaldi is making a name for himself in the UK music world. A guitarist, composer, improviser, and sonic textualist, he has forged a distinctive musical voice on electric, classical, and twelve-string guitars enhanced with ethereal loops and electronics creating otherworldly textures within his compositions. His latest album Celestial Stranger is set to be released this year on the Clonmell Jazz Social label. The twelve tracks display the guitarists exploratory nature amongst varying orchestrations of multi-layered guitars, often creating a dialogue amongst acoustic instruments and electronics. Intimate duos with drummer Blackmore and bassist Joel Humann exemplify the strong musical bond Morcaldi has with each member of the trio. When the three appear together, the exploratory nature of the group launches into full effect. The only non-original tune on the album is David Bowie’s Berlin-era instrumental Art Decade which features Blackstar bassist Tim Lefebvre providing his sonic stamp alongside Morcaldi and Blackmore. “Morcaldi’s playing brings together a sense of earthiness and grit with a celestial air of exploration—economical in its expression as it is outwardly searching in its disposition.” - EP Prezzano, Love All Day Records “A tight yet versatile trio, making the most of Ted’s intriguing compositions..... with the US guitarist equally adept on electric and acoustic instruments, enhancing the former with loops and electronic effects, often creating multi-layered soundscapes…..”  - Pete Butchers – Jazz Today Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming music releases from Ted on the label! A lovely demo of the latest IA guitar by local guitarist Ted Morcaldi. Hailing from New York, Ted's settled in Cambridgeshire and is quickly making a name for himself. I love his touch, dynamic and musicality of expression. This guitar features humbucker sized Staple P90s from Sunbear Pickups. It's a hollowbody style guitar without an f-hole. Lightweight (2.2kgs/4.85lbs), resonant and a delight to play. It was a treat to be present during these recordings and to hear the guitar in the context of Ted's own setup, showing off the versatility of the instrument. Ted's rig is relatively simple: a volume pedal, Boss DD-2 Digital Delay, Eventide Timefactor for loops and a Lexicon LXP-1 Reverb through a 1980s Musicman 112 RD50 amp. We recorded the session with a Rode NT1-A close mic'd and a Shure SM57 to capture a little of the room ambience. #swannellguitars #electric #guitar #electricguitar #guitars #ukluthier #craft #handcrafted #guitarmaking #guitarmaker #sunbearpickups #pickups #staplep90 #p90 #jazz #nickdrake #mollydrake #drake @europeanguitarbuilders_egb @bossinfoglobal @eventideaudio @music_man @daddarioandco

Always Returning - Eno/Eno/Lanois From the album by Brian Eno, Roger Eno, and Daniel Lanois, Apollo, which I truly believe to be a masterpiece not only for the music but for how it achieves its original intention. It was made as the original soundtrack to the documentary “For All Mankind” (1989) which was cut from compiled footage of the Apollo missions, mostly first-hand footage the astronauts took. The music perfectly captures this journey. It makes the listener feel as though they are in the lunar module traveling to the moon, exploring its surface, then drifting back to earth. It also stays true to the fact that most astronauts took up country and western tapes with them (although one brought up Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique). Some upcoming gigs: Wednesday 18 Feb at @draymansely Jazz in the Fens w/ @huwvwilliams and @joshwalkermartin Wednesday 25 Feb @norwichartscentre with Texture 7 (@tomrogersonmusic and @jemdoulton ) opening for @sebrochford Finding Ways 8 March - reschedule of my Solo Ralph Towner Tribute gig @thegeldart #apollo #brianeno #ambientguitar #ambientmusic #soundtrack

Drifting Petals - Ralph Towner One of my favorite compositions of his… a great example of every note of the melody and harmony intertwining and having such purpose within the composition. Originally written as a duet but tried to make it work on guitar. I’ll be playing a solo gig at the @thegeldart in Cambridge this Sunday 8 Feb at 8 pm, a tribute to Towner, playing his compositions and other music he often played. #ralphtowner

Ralph Towner has always been my North Star. Discovering his music was like finding a door to another fascinating world to explore. He was truly a trailblazer having developed such an individual sound with his playing and compositions that is so personal but so inviting and deep. His music with Oregon, as a soloist, duos with John Abercrombie, Gary Peacock… so much more… it’s all so inspiring, unique and transcendent. His book is also one of the best I’ve ever worked from — so articulate about abstract ideas and concepts of sound and development, just endlessly inspiring much the same as his music. The first time I met him is still the peak goofiest thing I’ve accidentally said to one of my heroes. During Oregon’s set break at birdland I went up to him, not knowing what to say. I nervously mixed my words and what came out was, “Hi Ralph, it’s a pleasure to meet you, I’m one of your biggest influences.” He and Glen Moore burst into laughter and Ralph responded graciously, “I suppose you are!” Luckily he had a great sense of humour too! The memories of hearing him live and talking with him will always be at the forefront for me. Seeing him last at age 79 playing a solo gig, two sets, still growing as a player and composer at that age was so moving, a perfect lesson really. I’m forever grateful to him and all the music he created and made way for. #ralphtowner
