“It’s not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something. May I suggest that it be creating joy for others, sharing what we have for the betterment of personkind, bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely.” ― Leo Buscaglia. Today, I will talk about Mabel Keaton Staupers (unfortunately, I couldn’t find a quote from her, but the above quote from Buscaglia fits her life). Mabel was born in Barbados on February 27, 1890, & passed away in Washington, DC, on November 29, 1989. She faced racial discrimination after graduating from nursing school (Freedman’s Hospital School of Nursing), but that didn’t stop her. Mabel became an advocate for racial equality in the nursing profession. She also helped remove barriers to African Americans’ acceptance into the US military & other institutions. In 1903, Mabel & her parents immigrated to the USA, & she became a US citizen in 1917. She graduated with honors from Freedman’s Hospital School of Nursing & worked as a private duty nurse. As the Executive Secretary of the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN), she fought the Army & Navy to ensure they included black nurses in WWII. The goal of this association was also to fight for the inclusion of black nurses in all nursing schools & professional organizations in states where they were banned. Mabel & Estelle Masse Riddle paved the way for them to fully integrate into the nursing profession in every state in the USA. Mabel also played a role in the desegregation of the military’s nursing corps during WWII. Eventually, in January 1945, the US Army opened its Armed Forces Nurses Corps to include all qualified applicants, regardless of race. The American Nursing Association followed in its footsteps & opened its doors in 1948. Mabel won the 1951 Spingarn Medal for her efforts on behalf of black women in the medical field. • 2025 World Championship/Grand Finals Psyched to be apart of such a unique experience, the team format really shows what climbing’s all about. Some of the most fun i’ve had, couldn’t have done it without our team. Felt great coming out of World Champs, really happy with my climbing this season, excited to take some time off before getting back into the grind. @usaclimbing @grandfinals2025 @ifsclimbing 📸 @lasportivana #climbing
